We cut the ribbon for a state-of-the-art ambulatory surgery center (ASC) in St George, UT to kick-off St George Regional Hospital’s Health Fair on Saturday, September 17th at 6pm. The center will be known as Intermountain Surgery Center – St George and will offer same-day urology and orthopedic surgeries in four specialized operating rooms. It will also include diagnostic and preventive procedures outside of the traditional hospital setting – making it more convenient for patients as well as more affordable, while maintaining high-quality surgical outcomes. “I’m excited to work in a facility that will be streamlined with the latest technology and designed for specific surgeries,” said Dr. Jordan Ash, anesthesiologist and medical director for the ASC. “This will also help lower the cost for some of our most common orthopedic surgeries."

September is National Suicide Prevention & Awareness Month. Suicide is something that impacts all of us, whether we've treated patients after a suicide attempt, lost a loved one or colleague to suicide, been a listening ear for someone in a dark place, or have been in that place ourselves. “When it comes to taking steps to prevent suicide, there’s no wrong door,” says Dr. Anne Pendo, who chairs our Caregiver Wellbeing Committee and is our senior medical director for provider experience. “Everything from crisis lines, to EAP, to peer counseling, to simply inviting someone to lunch once a week are all ways we can help prevent suicides." We can take steps to prevent suicide every day, not just when someone is in crisis. Emily Stirling, our caregiver social well-being director, emphasizes taking time to connect with each other, checking in, and reinforcing that it’s ok not to be ok, are key to preventing suicide. Our spine program at Intermountain Medical Center in Murray, UT earned a rare "no findings" report from the Joint Commission in August! Many of the program’s processes were at an Advanced Certification level, according to the reviewer, who observed high levels of collaboration and a passion for patient care. She also praised the team’s great documentation, its culture of process improvement, and the way education is systematized. “This was my first experience with a Joint Commission survey,” said John Macfarlane, MD, associate medical director. “As I spent the day with the surveyor, I was in awe of our great team. The surveyor interviewed, quizzed, and questioned caregivers from each part of the spine patient’s journey—the pre-operative, peri-operative, and post-operative care areas. Each caregiver spoke knowledgeably and passionately about the great care they provide for our patients. I’m grateful to be a part of this team and thank the team members for their ongoing contributions to our program.”
