There are many barriers to seeking healthcare in rural areas, including access, transportation, workforce shortages, stigma, and more. Because of this, Intermountain Health is committed to finding new ways to provide excellent healthcare to the rural communities we serve and meet the needs of every patient. Dr. Steven Griffin is Intermountain Health’s only full-time pediatric provider in Eastern Montana. He works at Holy Rosary Clinic in Miles City and sees roughly 15-20 patients per day. Dr. Griffin attends deliveries, treats babies in the nursery, takes care of sick kids in the clinic, assists with pediatric consultations in the Emergency Department, and admits sick children to the hospital if they require a higher level of care. By doing this, children in Eastern Montana don’t have to travel long distances to receive quality care. “I was looking for a role where I was able to fully meet the needs of children of all ages,” said Dr. Griffin. “Holy Rosary was the perfect opportunity for me because I didn’t want the typical 8-5 pediatric office. I enjoy going into the hospital and doing everything from neonatal resuscitations to college physicals when patients are ready to enter the adult world. This style of practice is fizzing out everywhere except for in rural areas, so this was a perfect fit.”

Ryan Seacrest and his family were on hand Tuesday to celebrate the opening of a new state-of-the-art broadcast studio for patients at Intermountain Primary Children’s Hospital. Top Gun Maverick star Miles Teller, singer, songwriter Andy Grammer, and actor, director & producer Zachary Levi were also on hand to celebrate the opening of the new studio with patients and their families. Seacrest Studios are charitable endeavors of the Ryan Seacrest Foundation, which was started by the radio and television star, along with his family. The goal of the foundation is to contribute positively to the healing process for children and their families while in the hospital. “We are thrilled to welcome Primary Children’s Hospital to the RSF family as we open the 14th Seacrest Studio at children’s hospitals nationwide, and the third one this year,” said Ryan Seacrest, chairman and founder, Ryan Seacrest Foundation. “It’s incredibly rewarding to know that more kids will have access to the wonders of media during their stay and I look forward to seeing how they use these new skills in the years to come.”

New moms with questions or concerns about breastfeeding are now able to see an international board-certified lactation consultant over telehealth, thanks to a new program launched by Intermountain Health in Utah and Idaho on November 1. The program offers video visits through Intermountain’s well-known telehealth platform, Connect Care, and is offered as an option in addition to in-person lactation consultations available in Intermountain clinics after new moms go home from the hospital. “It’s common to have challenges with breastfeeding. There can be a learning curve for first time moms, and even for moms who’ve breastfed before. Every baby’s anatomy is unique and their coordination and learning to latch on can vary,” said Maurine Cobabe, MD associate medical director for telehealth services at Intermountain, who leads the new program. Intermountain plans to launch similar telehealth lactation services in Colorado and Montana in January 2024.

We're thrilled to be recognized by Fortune and Premier as a Top 15 Health System in 2023! Fortune and PINC AI, the technology and services platform of Premier, used Medicare data to analyze 361 U.S. health systems made up of more than 3,300 hospitals total and discern standout organizations for its "2023 15 Top Health Systems." The award is not merely symbolic. PINC AI's analysis for 2023 found that inpatient mortality and healthcare-acquired infections were about 21% lower, each, for winning systems compared to their non-winning peers. Winning systems had a 2.6% lower Medicare spending per beneficiary index than nonwinners.

Robert Monge received a kidney transplant at Intermountain Health more than 15 years ago, and since that time, he’s regularly shared his experience with other kidney transplant patients as an Intermountain volunteer. Today, Robert volunteers at Intermountain Medical Center in Murray, UT, where he and other transplant volunteers talk with liver and kidney transplant patients about their experiences. “I enjoy having those conversations because I’ve been through it myself,” Robert said. In honor of #InternationalVolunteerDay, we'd like to thank our 3,700+ volunteers across the Intermountain system. “Volunteering in a hospital or with patients provides a social connection that contributes to a healing environment for patients and visitors,” said Mike Rawlings, director of volunteer services. “Volunteers often comment on how serving people benefits them as much as it does the patient.” Not all volunteers work with patients, like Robert. Intermountain volunteers help in a variety of tasks in about 30 care sites including: 🎁 Gift shop support 👋 Information desk/greeters 🏥 Waiting room and department support 🦽 Patient deliveries 🎵 Performing music in care site lobbies 🐕 Pet therapy teams (certification required) 🛏️ Visiting patients 👶 NICU cuddler and parent support ⚕️ Hospice 🌻 Community Garden support If you or someone you know is interested in volunteering, we encourage you to reach out to the volunteer services department at your local care site!

Last week, Lutheran Medical Center and the City of Wheat Ridge Government gathered at the Green on 38th to build a bike for each 2nd grader at Stevens Elementary through the nonprofit Wish for Wheels. By providing kiddos, like the ones at Stevens Elementary, with a free bike, we are encouraging healthy habits at a young age while helping increase attendance and creating a love of bikes for students in low-income communities. Through funding provided by Lutheran and other donors, all 76 2nd graders at Stevens received a bike, helmet and bike lock! Image cred: City of Wheat Ridge #livingourmission

In September, Primary Children’s Hospital in Salt Lake City became Magnet designated, a recognition confirming that the nurses at the hospital exemplify the highest level of nursing excellence in healthcare. Making this a success took many outstanding nurses and their creative leaders, who worked behind the scenes to prepare units for the in-person survey. One of these leaders included a recently promoted OR nurse who had a limited amount of time to prepare the nurses in her unit so the teams at Primary Children’s could move forward together to earn the title of Magnet. Learn more about how Misse, or "Momma Misse" as her team calls her, used her influence as the OR engagement leader to help prepare and motivate their unit for Magnet.
