Suicide impacts us all, whether we’ve experienced suicidal thoughts ourselves or grieved the loss of a patient, colleague, or family member. Just as we share the impacts, we can also unite to prevent suicide. By knowing what to look for and being familiar with available resources, we can help each other live the healthiest — and longest — lives possible. 1. Know the warning signs for suicide: ➡️ Increased alcohol and drug use. ➡️ Aggressive behavior. ➡️ Withdrawal from friends, family, and the community. ➡️ Dramatic mood swings. ➡️ Impulsive or reckless behavior. ➡️ Giving away possessions. ➡️ Collecting and saving pills. ➡️ Buying a weapon. 2. Be aware of your surroundings and the people around you. Take time to connect and check in with others and ask yourself how you are feeling. 3. Ask questions like, “Have you had thoughts of ending your life?” Asking does not make someone more likely to attempt suicide and may actually save their life. If someone is in immediate danger or experience suicidal thoughts, call the suicide hotline at 988, or call 911.

Congratulations to Dr. Taryn Bragg, Pediatric Neurosurgeon at Intermountain Health and Associate Professor at the University of Utah, for being recognized by Nevada Business Magazine as its 2023 Healthcare Hero Award for ”Innovator”! Dr. Bragg is the only full-time, board-certified pediatric neurosurgeon caring for patients in the entire state of Nevada. “One of the greatest rewards of being a physician is the ability to make a difference in the lives of patients,” said Dr. Bragg. “I am grateful every day that I get to do what I love and am so incredibly honored to be recognized with such a meaningful award.” “Dr. Bragg truly is a hero and is so deserving of this prestigious award,” said Dr. Diane Alonso, Region Associate Chief Medical Officer for Specialty Care at Intermountain Health. “Intermountain Health partners with Dr. Bragg in Nevada to expand pediatric healthcare in our state. Before her arrival, the families of children she has cared for very likely may have needed to travel great distances to get care. We are thankful for her dedication in helping patients live the healthiest lives possible.”

Practice makes perfect. Skills like shooting free throws or painting are straightforward, easy, and the equipment needed to learn them is inexpensive. But what happens when the skill involves buying expensive fake body parts to train the next generation of doctors and nurses? The simulation lab at Saint Joseph Hospital in Denver, CO trains thousands of medical caregivers each year. They’re reducing costs and improving patient outcomes through a creative innovation: 3D printing their own simulation tools so students can practice procedures on models before turning to patient care.
