Nicole and Mark were vacationing in Thailand and, as part of the trip, they wanted to have an experience with elephants. But that day went terribly wrong when the elephant they were on became agitated, threw off the trainer, and started running. From her hospital bed at Intermountain Medical Center in Murray, Nicole said they both knew they were in trouble when the elephant not only threw the trainer but then rammed a man on a moped. That’s when they determined their best option would be to jump off of the large animal. Nicole ended up breaking her back, while Mark shattered his pelvis, broke two vertebrae in his back, and suffered other internal injuries. Both were taken to a hospital in Thailand. That’s when a friend of Mark’s arranged for Life Flight to travel halfway around the world to get them home. “It was a massive trip,” LifeFlight operations director Kent Johnson said. He was part of the meticulously planned mission to bring Nicole and Mark safely back to Utah. The mission included five pilots, five medical staff, several stops and perfect planning for the Challenger 604 super jet. “It was the furthest we’ve ever flown,” he said. The hospitalized Americans couldn’t have been happier to see them. “They treated us awesome on the plane,” Nicole said. “They’re super comfortable, it was a great experience actually.” Nicole is a hairdresser and said a client was one of the five medical staff on that 18-hour flight. She immediately felt at ease.

According to new federal data, Intermountain Medical Center in Murray, UT has the nation’s highest survival rate for heart attack patients. Data recently released from the federal Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, shows that Intermountain Medical Center – along with the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, and NYU Langone Hospital – have the highest 30-day survival rate in the nation for heart attack patients hospitalized for care. “We’re really proud of this achievement,” said Kent Meredith, MD, an interventional cardiologist at Intermountain Medical Center, who helps lead the heart attack treatment program at the hospital. “CMS is a government agency that tracks healthcare outcomes, so it’s free of the biases that can be seen by other reports from internal data. This data shows very directly that patients who were treated at Intermountain Medical Center have the highest percentage of surviving after a heart attack compared to all other hospitals in the United States.” “Many cardiovascular programs, both locally and around the country, place other things before quality, so our foremost dedication to the most appropriate care is unique at Intermountain Medical Center, and that commitment shows in our outcomes,” said Trey O’Neal, MD, who leads the heart attack treatment team at Intermountain Medical Center with Dr. Meredith.

All 21 Intermountain Health hospitals in Utah with labor and delivery departments have received a five-star rating for being breastfeeding-friendly facilities from the Utah Department of Health and Human Services by completing all ten steps of the department’s ‘Stepping Up for Utah Babies’ program. Earning a five-star rating typically takes years. The ten steps of the ‘Stepping Up for Utah Babies’ program are evidence-based maternity care practices that demonstrate optimal support of breastfeeding, as well as improved care experiences and outcomes for non-breastfeeding moms and families. “Earning the five-star breastfeeding-friendly rating from the Utah Department of Health and Human Services, signifies our caregivers are both competent and comfortable providing evidence-based education and valuable tools and resources to help families be successful in feeding their infants,” said Tiffany Hanson, MSN, MHA, RNC-OB, executive nursing director, obstetric and neonatal operations at Intermountain Health.
