Recently, members of our Nurse Enterprise Wellbeing Team and other Peaks caregivers were invited to attend the Colorado Workplace Well-being Summit to learn how to improve employee mental health through H.O.P.E Certification. The insights shared at the conference excited the Peaks members of the Nurse Enterprise Wellbeing Team, as they’ve searched for ways to evolve the nursing wellness model in Peaks that can be implemented enterprise wide. Our Nurse Enterprise Wellbeing Team consists of caregivers from all regions with an objective to: “Create a thriving environment where all nursing caregivers can find joy and fulfillment in their personal and professional lives caring for others.” This year, two members of this Team, Sarah and Malia, submitted for and were rewarded with a $50,000 Safety Grant to support the implementation of the Stress First Aid (SFA) model in the Peaks Region. This model was developed by the National Center for PTSD to improve recovery from stress reactions. It also provides a way to help all caregivers to check in with themselves and others regularly and be comfortable and competent in connecting with resources. “Having models like this will help nurses learn about and integrate tools to help them check in on each other and coordinate the resources that they need to get back towards that green zone. We know that humans don’t typically communicate negative feelings very well. Having simple tools to help will be very beneficial,” Sarah said.

Checking vitals is second nature to nurses. The around-the-clock routine is typically performed every four hours to monitor a patient’s health and prevent a downturn in their condition. At Primary Children's Hospital in Salt Lake City, July Mathias and Brianna Peterson have done many overnight vitals on pediatric patients and noticed that it often led to sleepless nights for patients and guardians. The two nurses decided to take these overnight experiences and use them as a study in the CORE Scholar Program, which would later lead to a published article in the “Journal of Pediatric Nursing." The study involved researching the effects of overnight vitals on acute care patients who are in the hospital. July and Brianna, with the help of their mentors Leandra Bitterfeld and Clare Kranz, reviewed 11 different studies that addressed acute care patients, things that might disrupt a child’s sleep in the hospital, and the safety of foregoing overnight vitals in acute care patients. “I feel like in the last year, aside from our study experience, there have been so many growth opportunities introduced here at Intermountain that I think are phenomenal,” July said. “It felt empowering to jump into this process with only a bachelor’s degree in nursing and have the support from Leandra and Primary Children’s to help us make sure we were doing things correctly. It’s exciting to know that you can get involved where you are at right now.”
Elias, who works in our Supply Chain Center’s (SCC) Fulfillment Center, arrived in the United States in 2016 as a refugee from the Republic of Congo, a region in Africa engulfed in violence and armed conflict. Now seven years later, with a smile on his face and gratitude in his heart, he’s officially a U.S. citizen. Making a journey of over 8,000 miles away from his home, Elias found asylum in Utah with his brother, who had arrived eight years earlier. He immediately set out to find employment, first working for Delta Airlines, then landing at Intermountain Health. “Elias is always smiling and can’t do enough to help others,” said Gordon Slade, senior director distribution services. “He lives and embraces Intermountain’s values, is very humble, and loves to work. He also supports and embraces others from different cultures and ethnic backgrounds to make sure everyone feels welcome.” In February, Elias received a call from the immigration office requesting that he show up the next day to take his test to become an American citizen. With little time to prepare, he said a prayer that he would be able to succeed. A few weeks later, he arrived to work at the SCC with his U.S. citizenship certificate in hand and tears of happiness streaming down his face. He told everyone how proud he was that he was officially an American citizen.

Daniel's life took a dramatic turn when he contracted the COVID-19 virus in July of 2021. With his lung capacity at only 30%, he was admitted to the intensive care unit at American Fork Hospital in American Fork, UT. The ICU became Daniel's temporary home, and the exceptional medical staff became his lifeline. From registered nurses Brittany Hoover and Ryan Denison, who worked tirelessly during the night shift, to the surgery staff member who played a crucial role in his care, the AFH team exhibited unwavering dedication and expertise. They risked their safety amidst the COVID-19 pandemic to help Daniel regain his strength and fight for his life. Their encouragement, skill, and care profoundly impacted his journey to recovery. A few years later, the ICU staff experienced a heartwarming. On a different floor of American Fork Hospital stood Daniel — no longer a patient battling for his life, but a man embracing a new chapter of hope and happiness. He had returned to the hospital, not as a patient, but as an expectant father. Daniel and his girlfriend Abbie, filled with gratitude for the care they had received during a time of immense uncertainty, chose American Fork Hospital as the place to welcome their new baby into the world. The hospital that had witnessed Daniel's fight against COVID-19 now became the backdrop for a joyous celebration of life, and a testament to the strength of the human spirit and the power of hope.

A total of 14 Intermountain Health hospitals received a 5-out-of-5-star rating from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS)! This recognition is a testament to our caregivers' commitment to providing safe, top-quality, patient-centered care to all those we are privileged to serve. CMS developed Star Ratings to help consumers make more informed decisions. CMS evaluates hospitals on their performance in areas such as safety, readmissions, patient experience, and mortality after heart attack or pneumonia. Hospitals receive one to five stars, with more stars indicating better performance in the areas evaluated. Out of a review of more than 4,000 hospitals nationwide, these hospitals were 14 of just 483 hospitals reviewed that received 5 stars.
