Five of the six city charter high schools operated by Mastery Schools showed improvement in their four-year graduation rates in the last five years, according to the most recent data reported by the Pennsylvania Department of Education. Mastery Charter School Pickett Campus reported the highest four-year graduation rate of 94.29%, followed by Mastery Charter School Shoemaker Campus at 93.33%; Hardy Williams Mastery Charter School at 90%; Mastery Charter School Thomas Campus at 86.24%, Mastery Charter School Lenfest Campus at 83.91% and Simon Gratz High School Mastery Charter at 83.91%. On Tuesday, May 6, 2025, Mastery Schools students, parents, and staff traveled to the Pennsylvania State Capitol in Harrisburg to engage with more than 15 legislators for 2025 Advocacy Day. The group joined other organizations from across the Commonwealth, calling for improved policies and reform. Learn more below:
Eastside High School teacher Lyonel Dugue on Friday was intently working a quadratic equation on a whiteboard for a one-on-one algebra lesson in Spanish with senior Marvin Henriquez. Dugue, a native of Haiti who arrived in Camden 35 years ago and has been working in the district for 32 years, was through a demonstration of how to factor to find a solution. He was explaining the answer when a group of colleagues and representatives of the nonprofit Camden Education Fund burst into the classroom to surprise him with the news that he was one of three Camden educators winning the 2025 RISE Teaching Awards. And he found that the surprise – including an oversized $5,000 check – was being broadcast live on FOX 29’s morning show. Like the other two Camden educators recognized – and surprised – Friday with the RISE Award, Dugue was shocked. The other two are Tasha Terry, elementary special education teacher, at KIPP Lanning Square primary school and Irma Diaz, elementary English language learner teacher at Mastery Molina Elementary School. Mastery Molina students joined forces with the City of Camden for the Camden Strong Community Cleanup at Whitman Park. This event, organized by the city and led by Mayor Victor Carstarphen, brought together residents, local organizations, and corporate partners, including The Campbell’s Company, to help beautify the neighborhood and strengthen community ties. FOX 29 Philadelphia’s Hank Flynn joined Social Responsibility Through Me and the Junior League of Philadelphia for its Kids in the Kitchen program at East Camden Middle and McGraw Elementary. Thanks to the program, students learn about healthy meal choices and are empowered with cooking skills they can use at home with their families. Learn more here:
