The National Education Equity Lab’s Honor Society celebrates outstanding student achievement in college credit-bearing courses from leading institutions, highlighting academic talent in low-income high schools across the country. Three Mastery Schools–Pickett Campus, Lenfest Campus, and Hardy William High School–have inducted a total of 12 students into the Honor Society for top national performance this semester. Alyssa Ryan is a lifelong Philadelphia resident who’s been at the Mastery Charter Lenfest School for 14 years as a special ed teacher and case manager. She felt her students with intellectual disabilities and autism needed help transitioning to what comes next after school, so she developed a transition program. “Really focusing on developing vocational and independent living skills to prepare them for that next step and that transition, if you will, into adulthood or independence, and whatever that looks like for them,” she explained. The “Black Women in Sport Foundation” is a nonprofit focused on athletic inclusion for Philadelphia youth. They offer the platform for young girls of multiple backgrounds to be involved in sports, both on the field and in other supporting roles. They have programs in underserved Philadelphia communities that teach not only athletics, but also life lessons. Some of those programs take place during the summer or after school. "Once upon a time, I didn’t want to work with children. The idea of teaching had crossed my mind a few times over the years, but it always involved instructing older students. It would be too challenging, I reasoned, to work with young ones. But that was then. Now, I’m happily in my second year of working as a tutor with students at Mastery Charter Smedley Elementary in the Frankford section of Philadelphia. It is challenging work.
