In honor of #BlackHistoryMonth, we are excited to highlight our Black Connect Community Group team member Moniqua Sexton. Moniqua is both a Senior Communication Specialist and Author who uses the art of storytelling to create better #representation. 📚 I am heavily engaged in the Black book community on socials, and representation to me is making sure I do everything I can to make sure the voices of Black authors are heard, whether they are traditionally or independently published. It means a lot to me as someone who is also an author, that our voices are heard, and stories are told, because we have a lot to say and share. Written words are a beautiful form of artistic and emotional expression, whether through fiction, poetry, or a memoir, from history to present day. Representation is my son being able to go into a bookstore and pick up a book with a child who looks like him on the cover, because as a child, I didn’t have that. Representation is reading stories where I can see myself and heavily relate to the character. Representation is writing stories that other Black men and women can relate to, especially in genres that we may not feel we belong. Representation is being in spaces we used to not be able to set foot in. As individuals, find a genre that you like, and read a book in that genre by a Black author. It might just surprise you, and you might learn something new.
