The week of May 18, a group of men and women inside the Mesa County Detention Facility did something that many people don’t associate with jail: they graduated. Their accomplishment marked the completion of the facility’s Substance Use Disorder (SUD) program — a meaningful milestone in each participant’s recovery and a reflection of what is possible with treatment in an environment of structure and respect. NaphCare Nurse Honored with Georgia Governor’s Proclamation and Commissioner’s Coin of Excellence During National Nurses Week NaphCare, a national leader in correctional healthcare, is proud to announce that Ashley Atkinson, Senior EHR Product Manager and a registered nurse working with the Georgia Department of Corrections (GDC), was honored today with a Governor’s Proclamation and the Commissioner’s Coin of Excellence, presented by the Georgia Board of Corrections and Commissioner Tyrone Oliver. Atkinson was one of four nurses statewide selected for the honor. She was nominated by Georgia Department of Corrections staff and chosen by Assistant Commissioner Randall Sauls and Commissioner Oliver in recognition of her exceptional contributions to patient care and leadership in advancing healthcare technology across the GDC’s Office of Health Services. The recognition was presented during the May 7 meeting of the Board of Corrections as part of a special ceremony honoring nurses and correctional officers across the state in observance of National Nurses Week, May 6–12. On a Thursday afternoon in March, a group of about a dozen women – female residents at the Forsyth County Law Enforcement Detention Center (FCLEDC) in North Carolina – accepted certificates of completion from a weeks-long course of mental-health treatment and counseling. As they read aloud personal statements on what the experience had meant to them, an audience made up of roughly fifty of their peers, plus a smaller group of facility staff and community members, cheered them on from the rows of chairs. As a medication-assisted treatment (MAT) nurse, Sam Oney has helped countless patients overcome addiction. She loves knowing that her work positively affects individuals, families, and the community. In partnership with the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office (WCSO), NaphCare, Inc., a leading correctional healthcare company, is proud to announce THRIVE, a Jail-Based Treatment Program (JBTP) for patients requiring specialized mental health treatment. Since September 2024, the voluntary treatment program has operated within a specialized mental health unit in the Washoe County Detention Facility. THRIVE fills a gap in care for this population, who are experiencing symptoms of serious mental illness in jail while they await transfer to or return from inpatient psychiatric hospitalization. The program is involved with the Washoe County Competency Court and supports patients by providing them with the advanced level of treatment needed to move forward in their legal cases and lives. “The Sheriff’s Office is pleased to partner with NaphCare on this innovative program, which seeks to improve outcomes for individuals housed in the jail-based mental health unit,” Washoe County Sheriff Darin Balaam said. “The deputies working in the unit are dedicated to collaboration with the assigned medical providers NaphCare has placed in the unit. Working together, and over a short period of time, we have already seen positive results from the program – a testament to the power of teamwork.” Read more below.
