Phoenix Children's full-time employed facility dogs, Gertie and Checkers, just celebrated their third work anniversary in July 2024. Gertie, Checkers and their handlers have helped many patients meet treatment goals — from physical therapy sessions to preparing for an upcoming surgery or procedure.In 2023, our facility dog teams participated in more than 2,200 patient visits and are on track to surpass that number in 2024.

Graduate spotlight on Dr. Marie Chevenon, who recently completed Phoenix Children’s 3-year ACGME-approved Pediatric Cardiology Fellowship Program: 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗶𝗺𝗺𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗻𝘀? “I am staying on as a fourth-year cardiac imaging fellow at Phoenix Children’s. After graduating, I will pursue an academic position to teach medical students, residents and fellows; then, a future leadership position.” 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘄𝗮𝘀 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗳𝘂𝗻𝗻𝗶𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗳𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗼𝘄𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗺 𝗺𝗲𝗺𝗼𝗿𝘆? “When another fellow fell off a kayak during our fellow retreat last year. Meet Bella, a member of Phoenix Children’s College Intensive Volunteer Program (CIVP). As a pre-med student, Bella knew she wanted to volunteer at Phoenix Children’s. Our volunteer program enables her to quickly gain substantial experience in a pediatric hospital setting. When asked what she enjoys most about volunteering at Phoenix Children’s, she said, “I enjoy supporting and interacting with patients. I know I made their day and hospital stay better.”

Our program also instills a strong sense of community service as residents have opportunities to work with underserved and vulnerable populations.

Phoenix Children's opened a new urgent care center for families in the East Valley. The new location in Mesa, at 9319 E. Cadence Pkwy., provides quality pediatric urgent care every weekday, from 5 – 11 p.m., and on weekends, from 10 a.m. – 7 p.m.
