As Phoenix Children’s Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) Clinic helps Samanatha navigate ulcerative colitis, a type of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), she has dedicated her time to leading our IBD Junior Board. Designed to raise awareness for IBD and help fund research for a cure, this member-run board enables kids with different IBD conditions to get to know and support each other. This peer-nominated award recognizes physicians within our health system who provide exceptional patient care, promote teamwork, and share their knowledge and expertise. Dr. Carter was also recognized for an unwavering commitment to his team in the pediatric intensive care unit.

His insights, along with those from Dr. Tim Nunn of CURE Children's Hospital of Ethiopia and an instrumental faculty have been instrumental in advancing pediatric orthopedic care. This innovative course delivered comprehensive training on pediatric musculoskeletal infections, showcasing the dedication of our physicians to enhance pediatric healthcare on a global scale.

Congratulations to Rachael Baker, MPH, manager of quality and data, for being named a March of Dimes Hero in Action. March of Dimes hosts an annual award ceremony to recognize outstanding nurses and maternal and infant healthcare providers across Arizona. Colleagues, supervisors and instructors submit nominations to recognize healthcare heroes in 15 diverse categories. Ashley Rollins, Supervisor, RN residency program; Ashley Wilson, RN, clinical nurse; and Melinda McLaughlin, RN, quality and patient safety clinical consultant, were also nominated. In the category of Diversity and Advocacy Excellence, Rachael stood out as a passionate advocate for patients and their families. Her dedication to ensuring equitable, respectful, and high-quality care for all families seeking assistance from Phoenix Children’s Transplant, Dialysis, and Apheresis programs, especially our Black, Indigenous, and other families of color, earned her this well-deserved honor. We recently had the honor of hosting our end of year event for our Patient Family Advisory Councils (PFACs). It was an inspiring day dedicated to acknowledging the extraordinary work and impact of our PFAC members over the past year. Throughout 2023, our PFACs have played a crucial role in advancing patient care and enhancing family communication. Their innovative ideas have been instrumental in shaping a more responsive and patient-focused healthcare environment.

A recent workshop, featuring a multidisciplinary team of experts including Dr. Greg White, Dr. Jud Karlen, Dr. Dave Bennett, and Dr. Jennifer Ronecker, along with Dr. Steve Beck's insights on pain management, provided an in-depth exploration of scoliosis. The session provided a comprehensive understanding of scoliosis types, diagnostic methods, and a spectrum of treatments, both operative and non-operative. A highlight of the workshop was the discussion of complex patient cases where our orthopedic and neurosurgeons collaborate, underscoring the benefits of multidisciplinary care. Attendees, including RNs, residents, fellows, and medical students, improved their knowledge and skills in advanced scoliosis management.
