Vi Garza, RN, at Phoenix Childrenโs , was presented a DAISY award for providing exemplary care in our pediatric intensive care unit. One patient family said, โVi embodies all the qualities that make a nurse exceptional. She demonstrates a deep passion for providing compassionate care. Her genuine empathy, kindness and ability to connect with individuals on a personal level are truly remarkable. Every day, we felt valued, respected and supported. Her ability to provide emotional support and comfort during difficult times is nothing short of extraordinary.โ

Dr. Michael Henry, a pediatric hematologist/oncologist at Phoenix Childrenโs Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders was presented with Arizona Cancer Foundation's Sunshine Award for their 2023 Healthcare Hero. In addition to providing world-class patient care, Dr. Henry serves as the section chief of our liquid tumor program and director of our early drug development and histiocytosis programs. He also developed our hematology/oncology fellowship training program. He is committed to advancing patient care, educating future providers and working toward the ultimate goal: A cure for cancer. Her experience living with diabetes inspired her to become a nurse โ and her goal was to be a nurse at Phoenix Childrenโs where she received specialized medical care as a child. At Phoenix Childrenโs, we understand that kids of all ages and abilities need a break from hospital routines. Weโve recently remodeled our 4,500 sq. ft., covered outdoor play area at our Thomas Campus โ complete with safe and accessible climbing structures, a slide and a wide variety of fun activities. Our healthcare team also uses this space for social and therapeutic play, which helps kids cope, learn and heal.

With attention to every meticulous detail, we are putting the finishing touches on this 44,000 sq. ft. state-of-the-art clinical space that provides our patient families all the comforts of home. Once open in a few months, this new space will replace our existing NICU as Arizonaโs only American Academy of Pediatrics-designated Level IV NICU. We will also continue to offer the stateโs only neuro-NICU and the Newborn Early Screening Team (NEST) Clinic.
