Meet Paul, who joined Phoenix Children’s volunteer program about six months ago. Serving in various areas of our hospital, Paul enjoys helping out in whatever areas need his support. Whether he’s comforting infants, delivering labs or spending time bedside with our patients, Paul enjoys bringing some sunshine and compassion to those who need it most. Paul first heard about our volunteer opportunities from a friend. He joined our program so that he could give back to his community and be there for those in need. His experience has given him a fresh perspective on his life. “No matter how hard you think life is, it’s a humbling experience to volunteer at a hospital, and if anyone has considered giving back and improving their lives, I recommend this!”

Meet Ian, yet another one of our highly valued volunteers at Phoenix Children’s. He is a float volunteer, which means he serves in different areas of our hospital — wherever he is needed most. Many times, you’ll find Ian working on our patient floors, making deliveries for our Clinical Laboratory and guiding families to different areas within our facility. Ian first learned about our program through a friend at school. Since he loves working with children, our program was a great fit. To date, Ian has been volunteering at Phoenix Children’s for about 9 months. When asked how it’s going, he said, “Being able to work with the kids and helping them have some fun during their time at the hospital is such a privilege and is something that I look forward to every week!”

Richmond, or Richey (left), is one of our volunteer-based animal-assisted therapy (AAT) pets. Together, they visit patients in our pre-operative area every Monday (along with Richey’s volunteer handler, Marian). During the event, he was so moved by the inspiring patient stories, he signed up as an in-hospital volunteer. Now retired from his professional career, he dedicates much of his free time to volunteering. If you visit our hospital, you’ll find Steve helping in many areas —working at our front desk, escorting patients and families throughout our facility, and delivering gifts, flowers, food and smiles to patient rooms. Every year, he also volunteers at our annual toy drive. When asked why he volunteers at Phoenix Children’s, Steve said, “Phoenix Children’s is such a special place. I enjoy volunteering for an organization that does such good work for the community and for children.”

Laurie’s story of volunteerism is heartwarming. She first came to Phoenix Children’s when a family member needed medical care. During her many visits to our hospital, Laurie got to know our facility, staff and volunteers. It was then that Laurie knew she wanted to pay it forward for other patient families. When serving at Phoenix Children’s, Laurie spends much of her time interacting and comforting our patients. Families trust her so much that during her time with their children, they are comfortable to step away and take a short break to recharge their own batteries. Families often thank Laurie for her service, but she is always quick to say that she “gets much more than she gives.” Volunteering at Phoenix Children’s is her “happy place.” She gets a feeling of exhilaration knowing that she is doing something truly worthwhile.

Phoenix Children’s graduate medical education (GME) is dedicated to educating and mentoring the next generation of pediatric providers by leveraging advanced methodologies and programs available right within our health system. Pictured here are members of our Pediatric Dermatology Fellowship Program participating in a Vascular Anomalies Clinic. Members look forward to experiencing different multidisciplinary clinics each week, during which they can present cases and learn from our highly specialized clinicians.

Sigrid has served as a valued member of our volunteer program for the past 30 years (and counting!). Sigrid spends much of her time helping staff and patient families on our pediatric intensive care unit (PICU). You’ll find Sigrid at our patients’ bedsides, bringing them comfort and gently playing and singing with, and talking and reading to them. She also helps make sure parents’ needs are met. Sigrid has dedicated much of her life to serving as a volunteer for Phoenix Children’s, for which we are truly grateful. In fact, she began volunteering well before we opened our first free-standing hospital on Thomas Road, at a time when we were located on two floors of what is now Banner – University Medical Center Phoenix (formerly Good Samaritan).

Participants of Phoenix Children’s Pediatric Cardiology Fellowship Program gained hands-on experience as they reviewed the pathology, embryology and gross anatomy of pediatric heart models exhibiting a wide range of heart conditions — including atrial septal defect (ASD), ventricular septal defect (VSD), atrioventricular septal defect (AVSD), single ventricle variants and atrial isomerism.
