Julia Jimmie, BSN, RN, and Heidi Bliss, ASN, RN, are Phoenix Children’s 2022 Gastroenterology (GI) Nurses Scholarship recipients. The (Rayhorn) GI Nursing Education Fund was established by former colleague, Nancy Rayhorn. Having been a nurse clinician in the Phoenix Children’s Gastroenterology Department for more than 20 years, Nancy started this fund in 2013 in recognition of the significant role that collaboration, mentorship and continuing education play in the delivery of superior patient care. These scholarships are awarded each year to empower GI nurses in their professional development and pursuit of excellence.

Phoenix Children’s 2022 Staff Nurse of the Year Award went to Danette Lemkee, registered nurse in our Emergency Department. Danette truly epitomizes an exemplary emergency department registered nurse in all aspects. As a highly-skilled, extremely knowledgeable and compassionate team player, she takes both an evidence-based and family-centered approach to providing comprehensive and compassionate emergency and trauma care. Her extreme versatility enables her to fill in for almost every role within the emergency department. In short, our team and our patient families can always count on her. If we could clone Danette, we would! That’s why we asked Danette to help educate, assist and mentor recently graduated RNs and those who are new to our fast-paced and intense Level 1 Pediatric Trauma Center.

As a clinical floor manager, Jennifer exemplifies the mission at Phoenix Children’s. Leading by example, she continually inspires her team as she provides hope, healing and the best possible care to her patient families. Jennifer is a truly authentic leader who collaborates with and empowers her team to excel every day. While she sets high expectations and holds her team accountable, she is also extremely caring and supportive of every team member. It’s this perfect blend of leadership that has earned her team’s trust and respect.

While relatively new to Phoenix Children’s, Elizabeth has made a significant impact on our nursing team and patient families alike. In addition to providing the best possible patient care, she serves as the co-chair of our preop and PACU unit-based council. In this leadership role, she shares her extensive knowledge and innovative new ideas so our team can work smarter as we deliver quality patient care and service. Her suggestions have been so effective that other hospital units are looking into implement her ideas. Elizabeth is certainly synonymous with next level care!

Eryn also works closely with Arizona State University nursing students in our simulation lab, which prepares them for clinical practice through hands-on training using our cutting-edge technology.

Phoenix Children’s now offers a dedicated hemangioma program to provide comprehensive specialized care for children with infantile and congenital hemangioma — a common type of birthmark. This new program is staffed with dermatologists, like Dr. Daniela Russi (right), and otolaryngologists, like Dr. Austin DeHart (left), to provide patients comprehensive, specialized care. Members of our pediatric dermatology fellowship also participate in this program to gain skills to manage and treat simple and complex hemangiomas.
