Brianna Ortega, MSN, RN, at Phoenix Children’s, is a Nurse Specialty Care Coordinator for our Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) Clinic, and was selected as the 2022 Healthcare Professional Honored Hero by the Crohn's & Colitis Foundation (Arizona chapter) and its Take Steps Committee. Caring for patients with IBD is near and dear to Brianna’s heart. Having IBD herself, Brianna was also named the Crohn's & Colitis Foundation Patient Honored Hero in 2019, and has focused her passion and career on enhancing the IBD patient experience at Phoenix Children’s and other health care facilities. She has been absolutely instrumental in creating programs, protocols and education materials to standardize and improve IBD patient care, and is heavily involved in numerous related parent groups and organizations.

The event raised awareness, research funds and support for these nervous system conditions.

We're excited to welcome Tara Mangum, MD, to Barrow Neurological Institute at Phoenix Children's neurocritical care team. Dr. Mangum (second from left) joins Brian Appavu, MD (far left), Varina Boerwinkle, MD (middle), Iris Marku, NP (second from right) and is led by Director of Barrow at Phoenix Children’s and Chief of Pediatric Surgery, P. David Adelson, MD. With the addition of Dr. Mangum, we will be increasing our training, research and care outreach capacity. Plus, we have now become the largest dedicated pediatric neurocritical care team in the US, second only to Lurie Children’s in Chicago.
