During the month of March, hundreds of Child Life programs across the country take the opportunity to educate healthcare colleagues and the public about the services provided by Child Life professionals, and the importance of effectively addressing the psychosocial needs of children in pediatric settings. Phoenix Children's team of 34 Child Life Specialists and 16 Child Life Assistants provide services in over 16 patient areas. Last year, the team of Child Life Specialists provided procedural support to over 41,000 patients. The playrooms were visited by over 28,000 patients and family members. Child Life has been here at Phoenix Children's from the start. The efficacy study (often referred to as the Phoenix Study) was completed at PCH in the late 1980’s and has provided valuable data to support child life services and programs across the country.

Her presentation was entitled “Advances in The Treatment of Brain Tumors in Adolescents." Congratulations, Dr. Bristol and keep up the great work on and off campus!

Did you know we have new leadership in the Phoenix Children’s Heart Center? Daniel A. Velez, MD is the Cardiac Surgery Division Chief and Co-Director of the Phoenix Children’s Heart Center. In just five years as faculty and now this year as Chief, he has been instrumental in key changes at the Heart Center by helping set a new direction— one where the team works collaboratively with cardiology, the cardiovascular intensive care unit and administration. Dr. Velez specializes in the repair of neonatal congenital heart defects (CHD), takes pride in the quality of surgical outcomes at Phoenix Children’s and strives to continue to build a nationally and internationally renowned pediatric cardiac program.

Employee Spotlight: Andrea White Collins, PNP Andrea thought she was leaving the cold Windy City for just "a few years" when she moved to Phoenix, but 35 years later, she can still be found in the Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders as one of Phoenix Children's favorite nurse practitioners. She has experienced a lot in her PCH career thus far, from seeing Phoenix Children's becoming a free-standing hospital to taking care of Emily Anderson (who the Emily Center is named after) to experiencing programs expanding across the Valley. "I have the greatest job in the world," Andrea said, "working with the patients and families of the CCBD. They are courageous and fun and oh-so-strong, and they teach me something new every day. Their journeys are difficult and sometimes heartbreaking, always inspiring, and I’m blessed to travel some of those journeys with them. I also work with an amazing group of colleagues, who teach and support me each day. I also love that I get to be a part of Camp Rainbow. It’s such an amazing week of fun and friendship - I celebrated 30 years of camp in 2017!"
