Here is the video transcript translated into English: February is American Heart Month and according to the American Heart Association, an estimated 40,000 babies are born each year with congenital heart defects, and about one in four has a critical congenital heart defect that requires surgery within a year. But historically, many babies leave their birth hospitals with their heart defect undiagnosed and therefore miss their window for surgery. We would like to congratulate a Phoenix Children's founding father on his retirement! The end of 2017 marked the retirement of David H. Beyda, MD, Division Chief of Pediatric Intensive Care for 35 years. Among all his contributions, Dr. Beyda has been a colleague, leader, researcher, humanitarian and teacher to so many at Phoenix Children’s, including medical students, residents, fellows and other faculty members—all while continuing to treat critically ill children on local and international levels. Our staff has Dr. Beyda to thank for so much of our Hospital’s success, and for setting the standard in giving tremendous patient care. We wish Dr. Beyda every happiness in his retirement and next chapter.
