Employee Spotlight: Eddie Nichols, Clinical Nurse, Emergency Department Eddie Nichols just celebrated his 45th year as a Phoenix Children's employee. He began his career with Phoenix Children's in the PICU when PCH was still a hospital within a hospital at Good Samaritan Hospital. He eventually became the charge nurse of the NICU and transitioned to the charge nurse of the Emergency Department when PCH became a free-standing hospital. While he enjoys volunteering at local events and photography, his true talent is transforming into Santa Claus every Christmas season. Known as PCH's resident Santa, Eddie has put smiles on countless children's faces every year when he visits the NICU and the ED's annual staff party.

Congratulations to Our September DAISY Award Winner, Noelle Voeller, NICU! The DAISY Award honors the super-human work nurses do in direct care of patients and families every day. The following is an excerpt from her nomination application: Noelle is a phenomenal nurse and truly made our family feel at home in the NICU. She provided our baby boy with excellent care and we felt incredibly comfortable and confident when she was looking after our son. She made sure to involve us in all of his cares and she provided us with a vast amount of resources and information. When our son was diagnosed with a coarctation of the aorta, she made sure to provide us with information from the Emily Center about this condition. She also provided printouts about some of his upcoming procedures, including the PICC line. She set us up with the Beads of Courage and continually kept it up to date for us. She explained everything about his care, medication and condition thoroughly. We could not have asked for a better nurse. She got to know our family and our son and all of our fun little quirks.

The following is an excerpt from her nomination application: My son had Elizabeth for an overnight shift with my son scheduled for surgery in the morning. My son was on Golytely as the surgery was a colonoscopy. All night long Elizabeth attended to him meticulously with regards to diaper changes and medications. Of course, all of my son’s nurses on the 8th floor did this as well. However, the reason I am nominating Elizabeth is the extra care and concern that she showed to me as his mother.

Phoenix Children's Hospital translates cancer treatments using 3D printing
Want to know how radiology is transforming patient care here at Phoenix Children's? The department is focused on reduction of radiation exposure and accuracy in our patient scans. Patients are imaged and treated using advanced technologies like the EOS full-body imaging system that can take a scan of the entire spine while standing; magnetically controlled rods "MAGEC Rods" that elongate and adjust for children with early onset scoliosis; and our Philips IQon Spectral CT scanner that provides highly detailed images of complex injuries, tumors and vascular structures all in a single scan.
