"October is National Physical Therapy Month! Phoenix Children's employs 20 physical therapists in our inpatient Rehab unit, acute care, outpatient clinic and satellites. Our therapists serve in a variety of clinics including cardiac, concussion, pain, NICU follow-up, Down Syndrome, Cerebral Palsy, Muscular Dystrophy, Epidermolysis Bullosa, Graft Vs. Host Disease and 22q, as well as the inpatient tower in our intensive care units, post-operative orthopedic unit, Hematology-Oncology, acute traumas, Neurology unit and our inpatient Rehab unit. They work with tiny babies in our NICU, all the way through young adulthood. This month the therapists will be participating in the Special Olympics Fall FUN Fitness event where they will be taking Special Olympics athletes through a standardized physical therapy screening for flexibility, endurance, strength and balance. This is part of an initiative set up by The American Physical Therapy Association for Global PT Day of Service, giving back to our community.

Congratulations to Justin Ryan, PhD, research scientist, Cardiac 3D Print Lab, for being invited to join the Board of Directors of the Web3D Consortium. Web3D is a standards development organization that develops and promotes new 3D technologies for the internet and other venues. The Web3D Consortium Board of Directors considers and makes strategic decisions on behalf of all Web3D Consortium members. The Board members exercise influence over the development and adoption of Web3D standards. They also provide valuable industry expertise to support the forward-thinking market strategy of the Consortium. Ryan is also an adjunct professor at Arizona State University within the School of Biomedical and Health Systems Engineering and helped to establish a clinical workflow and integration of 3D printing within the health care system at Phoenix Children’s.

Health IT is becoming increasingly important for hospitals and health systems to manage data gathering, reporting, patient security and clinical improvement. Vinay Vaidya, MD, Vice President and CMIO of Phoenix Children’s Hospital, is named as one of the 50 physicians who lead clinical IT and analytics efforts at hospitals and health systems across the country by Becker's Hospital Review. Dr. Vaidya started as the CMIO of Phoenix Children's in 2009. During his tenure, he has worked to develop medical informatics systems for pediatrics. The idea that his work on informatics can help to affect a much broader patient base is what drives him throughout his career. Dr. Vaidya has a patent on a system that presents critical patient information without human interaction. Congratulations, Dr. Vaidya, for this recognition!

Phoenix Children's partnership with VMware AirWatch and GroundControl allowed us to conceptualize and enable each of our patient rooms with Apple iPads that customize to every incoming patient. When a patient gets to their room, an iPad is waiting, personalized for the child’s age, language and family preferences about what type of content and apps the child is allowed to access. VMWare technologies also helped Phoenix Children's equip nursing staff with an Allscripts Mobile Care app on Apple iPhones, giving them the ability to enter and access patient and medication information at the bedside, without placing a device management burden on IT. Innovative solutions like these continue to improve patient experience at the Phoenix Children's. The role of IT at our Hospital plays a critical role in patient care, attributing to the Hospital's national ranking as a top IT department as a large hospital.
