Pharmacists have moved beyond compounding and dispensing medications to become vital members of multidisciplinary patient care teams. Here at PCH, we have six pharmacists who are Board Certified Pediatric Pharmacy Specialists, 22 residency-trained pharmacists and two PGY1 Pharmacy Residents. Our pharmacists advise doctors and nurses on evidence-based pharmacotherapy, monitor patient’s medication therapy, participate on patient care rounds and provide drug information to members of the health care team. So we want to make sure that they also have a prominent place in our Pharmacy Week observance and make a point to recognize their work on National Pharmacy Technician Day!

Each year, thousands of people in the U.S. die from the flu and many more are hospitalized. To protect the children we care for, Phoenix Children’s requires all employees to receive annual influenza vaccinations. The yearly, mandatory vaccination provides a unique opportunity to exercise a closed Flu POD (point of distribution) to practice treating mass populations with vaccinations in a short time period. Phoenix Children's is the only hospital in Arizona who practices a Flu POD. This exercise is coordinated with the Maricopa County Department of Public Health to exercise a Healthcare Preparedness Partner (HPP) response to a simulated public health incident. More than half of our employees participate in the POD, including our President and CEO Bob Meyer!
