Modern Healthcare’s prestigious Women Leaders program acknowledges and honors women executives from all sectors of the healthcare industry for their contributions to care delivery improvement, health equity, policy and gender equity in healthcare leadership. At SCAN, Karen Schulte and her team have: - Transformed SCAN Health Plan from a one-state, regional Medicare Advantage plan to a national health plan operating in five states: California, Arizona, Nevada, Texas and New Mexico - Pioneered SCAN’s population-specific plans: SCAN Affirm partnered with Included LGBTQ+ Health (HMO), the first ever LGBTQ+ health plan; and SCAN Inspired by women for women (HMO), the first health plan designed specifically for women. - Designed and launched SCAN’s first clinical care delivery operation and prepared a three-year national expansion plan to support multiple states and payment models. Happy International Women's Day from SCAN! This year, SCAN's Women's Employee Resource Group, WELL (Women's Employee Leadership Lab), hosted a 3-part series of events including a panel discussion, story slam, and journaling workshop. Employees from across the organization, joined by guest speakers LiYun Alvarado and Marlene Martin, shared insight into how they found their voice through impactful stories, poetry, and deep discussion. A huge thank you to everyone who gathered both in person and virtually to participate in making this event a huge success!

It’s Senior Independence Month and it takes a village to keep seniors healthy and independent. In addition to pioneering personalized health care through population-specific plans like Affirm, the first plan designed to support the unique healthcare needs and challenges of LGBTQ+ older adults, and Inspired, the first-of-its-kind Medicare Advantage Plan designed by women, for women, SCAN works to care for seniors through its partnerships and community grants. SCAN is happy to say that over half a million dollars were given in grants in 2023 to community-based organizations with an emphasis on advancing health equity within underrepresented populations. Join us in collectively advocating for seniors to live independently and thrive in their homes!
