Sequoia San Francisco community residents packing boxes of groceries for their neighbors at Western Park Apartments and Eastern Park Apartments. The initiative will continue for 13 weeks and is possible because of SSNC unrestricted funds to match Sequoia Living funds. The Sequoias Portola Valley community is doing the same for its neighbors at the Park Towers Apartments community in San Jose. #SequoiaSuperheros
Sequoia Living’s Mission is to provide homes and services for healthy aging. In support of that mission, we continue to prepare and serve meals, clean homes and common areas, provide multi-lingual advising and assistance, provide needed medical care and services, and a host of other essential services to Bay Area seniors. We need you now, more than ever. If you have been laid off, had your hours reduced, or otherwise been affected by the California Shelter in Place directives, Sequoia Living may be able to provide you employment. Congratulations to the talented team at The Sequoias Portola Valley for a stellar survey in their healthcare center. They were awarded the five star rating from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). Consumers use this as a guide for finding the best places for care. Exciting news! Sequoia Living Community Services has received a grant for $230,000 from the AARP Foundation to expand its Experience Corps literacy program into San Francisco and San Mateo counties. The expansion project will get underway this fall. Experience Corps is an intergenerational volunteer-based tutoring program that helps children who read below grade level become great readers by the end of third grade. The program inspires and empowers adults 50 and older to serve in their community and disrupt the cycle of poverty by making a lasting difference in the lives of America’s most vulnerable students. Experience Corps Marin, a Sequoia Living Community Services program, has been recognized by AARP as one of its largest California programs, serving over 2,210 students in 93 classrooms with 130 senior volunteers providing over 8,500 hours of instruction. From her earliest days at NCPHS, Amber Brocks had a goal: to work in Human Resources. “I love connecting people with information and support,” she explains. “I chose HR because it’s a department that is all about being there for people.” When Amber learned that additional HR opportunities might be available in NCPHS’ communities, she strategically applied for—and landed—an administrative assistant position at The Tamalpais. Before long, Amber became known at The Tamalpais for her dedication, high quality work, and service. Through it all, Amber stayed focused on her HR career goal. This year her persistence paid off; in July, Amber became the Tam’s new HR Coordinator. “I’m excited about letting our staff know how much they’re appreciated and connecting them with resources,” she says. If your dream job isn’t advertised yet, stay patient and keep learning new skills, Amber advises. “Even though your current job might not be an exact fit, you can still challenge yourself and help others.” “Don’t be afraid to ask questions,” Amber adds. “You might be surprised by what you learn!”
