This week, we celebrate Danny Thomas’ birthday. Danny Thomas wore many hats throughout his life. Actor. Comedian. Singer. Producer. Perhaps he is best known today as the visionary humanitarian who founded St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. His commitment to helping children and their families in their most dire times of need has touched millions of lives worldwide and continues to be an inspiration today. Every facet of his life was lived in service to that cause. He said, “Success has nothing to do with what you gain in life or accomplish for yourself. It’s what you do for others.” His legacy is seen daily in our work at St. Jude. Through his vision, he set the standards that paved the way for our researchers and clinicians to pursue his dream that no child should die in the dawn of life. When St. Jude opened its doors in 1962, the survival rate for acute lymphoblastic leukemia was 4%. Today, that cure rate is about 90%. In that same time, treatments developed at St. Jude have helped push the overall childhood cancer survival rate from 20% to 80%. As St. Jude makes more breakthroughs in research and treatment, those discoveries are shared to help improve the quality of treatment and care for children worldwide. Downing, MD, is the 2023 recipient of the Motif Global Humanitarian Medal of Honor in recognition of his commitment to pediatric cancer research and unwavering global efforts to enhance survival rates for children with cancer. "The biggest determinant of whether a child who is diagnosed with cancer will live or die is where they are born,” said Downing during a special ceremony at Carnegie Hall in New York City. After citing sobering statistics about low survival rates for pediatric cancers in low and middle-income countries, Downing said he was motivated to do more when he became CEO in 2014. Under his direction, St. Jude clinical care and scientific programs have expanded globally. In 2018, St. Jude and the World Health Organization launched the Global Initiative for Childhood Cancer to increase the survival rate of children with cancer worldwide to 60% by the year 2030. Currently, childhood cancer survival in low-income countries is less than 30% compared with developed countries that have cure rates of more than 80%. “We will be able to change the outcome for children,” said Downing. “One day, we will reach that dream of 'No child should die in the dawn of life.”

We are thrilled to unveil The Dominos Village, the new six-story, 307,000 square-foot patient housing facility on the St. Jude campus that will provide 140 furnished rooms to patients and their families traveling over 35 miles or more and need a place to stay overnight. Construction on the space, which will house short- and long-term stays, began in 2020 and was funded by Domino's as part of a 10-year, $100 million commitment to St. Jude. The Domino’s Village is part of the ambitious St. Jude strategic plan, which includes building and supporting best-in-class environments that offer patients and their families a home away from home. "The Domino’s Village offers a place where patient families can find comfort along their journey, a place where they can unwind, connect and recharge," said James R.
