Racial disparities exist in both the incidence and treatment outcomes for childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), and there is limited data on the genetic basis for such disparities. This is further exacerbated by the lack of genomic research in ALL populations from Africa, Latin America and Asia, even though these populations make up the bulk of pediatric cancer cases globally. “As a field, we really need to put diversity front and center in our research going forward,” said corresponding author Jun J. Yang, Ph.D., St. Jude Department of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences and Department of Oncology.

St. Jude Environmental Services Department receives national recognition
St. Jude employees currently represent nearly 120 homelands, including 17 African nations. Augustine Ntah, a native of Cameroon, works in the St. Jude Department of Security. "Cameroon is a blessed nation and beautiful place," he says. "I see a lot of similarities between Cameroon and St. Jude. St. Jude is ready to welcome you and appreciate the person you are. Following a promising first year of its 2022–27 strategic plan, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital is increasing its investment in programs to advance the study and treatment of pediatric cancer and other catastrophic diseases. The growth includes an additional $1.4 billion to the institution’s six-year operating and capital budget, bringing the total to $12.9 billion. The expansion also encompasses raising the number of new jobs from 1,400 to 2,300; and increasing funds for construction, renovation and capital needs from $1.9 billion to $2.3 billion. With 2,300 jobs on the horizon, St. Jude is investing in all of its resources, including its most important: people.

Currently too many CAR T cells become effector cells, those that directly kill infected or cancerous cells. Too few become memory cells that persist and create more T cells over the long term. Scientists in the Department of Immunology believed that if they created more memory cells, they could improve CAR T–cell therapy. School Program celebrates high school graduates
Pioneering researcher J. Paul Taylor, M.D., Ph.D., has been named scientific director and executive vice president of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Taylor steps into the role during a pivotal time of growth for the hospital. He has been serving as chair of the Department of Cell and Molecular Biology and directing the Pediatric Translational Neuroscience Initiative, a new endeavor that leverages the hospital’s strengths in research and experimental therapeutics to develop cures for childhood neurological diseases. Congrats, Dr. Taylor!
J. Paul Taylor, M.D., Ph.D., named scientific director and executive vice president of St. Jude
Four Ukrainian children and their family members arrived this week at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis. St. Jude is the first hospital in the U.S. to receive patients from Ukraine. The families travelled aboard a U.S. government-operated medical transport aircraft from Krakow, Poland. Thanks to St. Jude Global's initiative, SAFER Ukraine, these patients will receive cancer treatment and trauma-informed psychosocial therapy to address psychological, social, emotional, and cultural needs.
