Anna Jones, PhD, Jennifer Harman, PhD, and Ashley Anderst recently published an account of their experiences providing end-of-life support to patients and families during the pandemic. "Connecting with someone through a screen is fundamentally different from sharing the same physical space. This difference was readily apparent when I met with a patient nearing the end of life. Many of the therapeutic pauses and moments of silence that allow for the processing of difficult circumstances fell flat."

In childhood cancer survivorship, health officials and advocacy groups use five-year survival as the traditional benchmark of cancer success. As a result for many patients and survivors, five-year survival is synonymous with “cure.” But research from St. Jude scientists and others has shown that pediatric cancer and its treatment leave childhood cancer survivors at an increased risk of chronic, sometimes life-threatening health problems. Anna Lynn Williams, PhD, a survivor and current postdoctoral research scholar at St. Jude, explains more.

For the growing number of childhood cancer survivors, five-year survival is just the beginning
Most people know St. Jude as a pediatric hospital, but what about the older pediatric patients? Adolescents and young adults (AYA) treated at St. Jude have unique needs that are different from the younger pediatric patients. They often crave more control and independence and require different types of support as they combat their illness. Currently, there are roles available in our Child Life Program that deal specifically with AYA. If you'd like to assist this unique population as they navigate what it means to be a teen and a St. Jude patient, check out our available jobs.
