UofL Health – South Hospital’s campus is already expanding just six months after its grand opening in Bullitt County. The $8.5-million investment into the 60,000-square-foot, three-story building is directly across the street and allows additional space for services, including primary care, orthopedics, urology and eventually a women’s center. It will be known as Medical Plaza 2.

With ceremonial swings of sledgehammers, UofL Health – Mary & Elizabeth Hospital marked the major development phase of ‘The Birthing Place,’ with expected delivery just nine months away. The $20-million project is part of UofL Health’s commitment to providing convenient health care access to all—especially patients in underserved communities. The last baby delivered west of I-65, in a birthing center, was in 1974.

A 30-foot steel beam, decorated with the signatures of UofL Health – UofL Hospital nurses, physicians, administrators and staff, is taking its place in the structural framework of the new UofL Hospital West Tower. Expected completion for the first phase of the $186-million project is early 2025.

Congratulations to Jade Finley, the 2024 recipient of the UofL Health – Peace Hospital Scholarship for Inclusive Excellence for Mental Health Professionals and the first to receive this scholarship. Mental health professionals at UofL Health – Peace Hospital were inspired by the social justice movement in 2020 and wanted to create a new opportunity to support inclusivity while addressing the equity gap that serves as an obstacle for students of color interested in pursuing a master’s program in behavioral health that leads to clinical licensure.

A Jefferson County Public Schools (JCPS) teacher who works with some of the district’s most vulnerable children has been named a 2025 Kentucky Teacher Achievement Award winner and finalist for the 2025 Kentucky Teacher of the Year award. Angela Hardin teaches kindergarten through third-grade students at Peace Academy, an on-site school for children admitted to UofL Health – Peace Hospital who have often endured abuse and neglect.

A new stem cell therapy for heart failure is being tested in patients at the University of Louisville and UofL Health. Led by Dr. Roberto Bolli—a UofL professor of medicine, director of the UofL Institute of Molecular Cardiology and a UofL Health cardiologist—the trial is the first in the U.S. to test umbilical cord-derived stem cells in patients for heart failure and the first to use intravenous delivery of cell therapy for heart failure. It is also the first trial in the world to test multiple doses of stem cell therapy for chronic heart failure.
