Stephen J. Smith, Veritiv’s Chief Financial Officer, was a finalist in Atlanta Business Chronicle’s CFO of the Year. In addition to playing a critical role in the success of our business (including record performance in 2020 and 2021), Steve leads by example in how to live a life of integrity and service. Steve is a mentor. He initiated a mentorship program across his Finance organization to drive growth and development of his employees as both mentors and mentees. Steve is an ongoing champion for the community. In 2021, he supported the establishment of the Veritiv Charitable Giving Fund to ensure that the company had set aside resources to continue to support charitable organizations in the communities where Veritiv operates, as well as a Matching Gift Program to support those causes most important to our employees. Steve has served on the board of directors for Junior Achievement of Georgia since 2017. As a result, Veritiv dedicates hundreds of volunteers and thousands of volunteer hours each year to the Junior Achievement Discovery Centers in the Atlanta area.

To be a mental health ally at work means making your colleagues feel valued and needed – whether they appear to be struggling or not. After all, you never know what hardships are affecting people behind the scenes. You may be wondering how you start practicing allyship. 1. You listen. It sounds simple, but active listening can take practice. 2. Check in during these conversations. Ask questions like, “Is this conversation still okay with you?” or, “Would you prefer to talk privately another time?” 3. Finally, validate what the person is experiencing. Verbal validation is simple: as a person begins describing things they have gone through or are feeling, make your responses intentional. Mental health should be discussed openly year-round, but Mental Health Awareness Month gives us the opportunity to focus on breaking stigmas and showing allyship.
