A Company That Cares. Wakefern was honored as the 2018 Extraordinary Good Works recipient by the Commerce and Industry Association of New Jersey. Our associates volunteer at food banks. Our customers donate in the checkout lane. Our owners support fundraising initiatives all year round. Translation: We care. We care about our communities, and more importantly, we care about the people who live in those communities. Through ShopRite Partners in Caring, Wakefern donates $3 million annually to Feeding America foodbanks in ShopRite’s trading area. ShopRite associates volunteer and donate food to pantries and soup kitchens and engage customers in a “Round Up Your Change” register donation program. Since 1999, Wakefern’s donations total $45 million, with more than a million pounds of turkeys and many millions of pounds of food to local Feeding America food banks.
Sheridan named President of GS1, US. Joe Sheridan, President and COO of Wakefern Food Corp., was recently named chairman of GS1 US’s Board of Governors. In this new role, Sheridan will help govern GS1 US – an organization that designs and manages a system of supply chain standards. Sheridan will oversee a board that includes John W. Inwright (president and CEO, Wendy's Quality Supply Chain Co-op) and Mel Landis (senior vice president, Coca-Cola North America). Together they will guide strategy and overall governance of the 20-person board. They will work with GS1 US’s senior leadership team to oversee subcommittee priorities and ensure adherence to company goals. “Together with these innovative leaders, GS1 US stands ready to confront the opportunities of a rapidly evolving business and digital landscape,” said Bob Carpenter, president and CEO of GS1 US. “Their extensive expertise will prove invaluable to the organization as we anticipate the future needs of consumers and harness the power of data and technology to help bolster the success of our member companies.”
Celebrating Black History Month. Wakefern associates put together a list that honors African-American pioneers. The list includes a wonderful mix of inventors, judges, athletes, dancers, doctors and authors. We all know the story of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., that eloquent orator who encouraged a country to judge others not by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character. But do you know Rebecca Lee Crumpler – the first African-American woman to graduate medical school in the United States? Or Garrett Morgan – an inventor who patented the automatic traffic signal? Or Willie O’Ree – the first African-American to play in the National Hockey League?
Caring and Sharing. Wakefern’s Risk Management and Safety associates put together a care package for Puerto Rico hurricane victims. Three boxes were loaded with a mix of essentials and goodies, filling them with peanut butter, granola bars, breakfast cereal, dental floss, hot chocolate and hand sanitizer. One associate donated first aid supplies. Another brought in a water purifier. When the boxes were complete, Wakefern associates from Risk Management and Safety sealed them, then sent them on to Puerto Rico
Twice as Nice. Wakefern received awards for putting together the “Easiest Family Meal” and “Best Culinary Adventure Family Meal.” The pair of honors doubled Wakefern’s award total from last year, when the company was lauded for creating the “Healthiest Family Meal.”
Toast of the Town. Associates are polishing up their public speaking skills in Wakefern’s Toastmasters Club. According to Toastmasters International’s website, the club’s mission is to “provide a supportive and positive learning experience in which members are empowered to develop communication and leadership skills, resulting in greater self-confidence and personal growth.”
Great Grads. Wakefern honored the six newest graduates of the company’s Leaders in Training program at a luncheon last week. The program is designed to groom a new generation of leaders at Wakefern. Participants spent time in corporate offices and at retail stores, where they inevitably learned from their mistakes.
Offering Help and Hope. Wakefern associates from four different divisions volunteered at the food bank earlier this month. More than 40 associates from Product Integrity, Data Integrity and Production Planning, Social Media, and Digital Commerce and Analytics pitched in to help. Through our ShopRite Partners In Caring program, Wakefern provides $3 million annually to the food banks in our 10-state trading area. Since the program began in 1999, more than $44 million has been donated. These dollars are a significant source of support that Wakefern provides to the food banks, assisting them in carrying out their mission to feed the hungry.
Christmas Elves. Grocery West associates brought joy to the children of Lehigh Valley Hospital this holiday season. Wakefern associates purchased more than 100 toys and gifts for children who were staying at the hospital. They filled bag after bag with those gifts, before dropping them off at the hospital on Dec. 19.
Our Code of Conduct. At Wakefern, one of our core values is integrity. Conducting business with integrity means not only complying with government laws and regulations, but also adhering to the highest ethical standards. It’s about doing the right thing, even when it isn’t easy. These principles of ethics and integrity are at the heart of “Keeping the Promise,” Wakefern’s official code of conduct.
