paid vacation, sick leave and personal days off. Ample amounts of holidays observed. Very good retirement via Railroad retirement board. Matching 401k, however this was discontinued in the 2015 year. Pension after 5 years.

Benefits in the first year is mandatory. Although it wasn't expensive (Like $22) it's only for you and it's only medical. No dental or vision etc available for first year.

Overall their benefits package is pretty thorough. The retirement benefits are strong as they have both a 5% 401K contribution and the Railroad Pension Plan (after 5 years). They do suffer from the same issue as many companies who now have benefits sourced to many different companies so you have to keep track of too many cards and systems. Otherwise I found their package to be very solid.

The best thing is that it exists at all. The worst thing is that dental and optical don't kick in until you've been there over a year, you're forced to pay your first 3 months of union dues without receiving any representation, the AETNA health care is kind'a a joke, the retirement package is no better than any other rail company (despite being federally backed and funded)....I could go on.

All the all the employees pay the same amount for insurance so it is good for large families not so much for a single person. The company does not match 401k, no sick days, you have to have 10 years to get one personal day and no time and a half for holiday pay.
