All employees are eligible to register for the company 401k, and automatic payroll deductions are easy to set up and adjust. However, Part-time employees are limited in eligibility for the basic company match because the vesting rules limit it to those with more than 1000 scheduled hours in the calender year.
Unfortunately, the company policy seems to be for a skeleton crew of full-timers (generally limited to management team) to be supported by an army of part-timers. Hence, part-time hours can be dependent on individual performance (over an unspecified period) and/or limitations of weekly store goals and needs. It seems common practice to try and keep part-time hours as close to 20 hrs as possible, so if it is a tight week, you can get fewer than 20, and thus fall sort of the 1000 hrs for the year to actually gain a portion of the vested company match.
