The training and salary you get as a Soldier are only some of the ways the Army strengthens you for tomorrow. The Army also offers money for education, comprehensive health care, generous vacation time, family services and support groups, special pay for special duties and cash allowances to cover the cost of living.

Pros: Free healthcare. Housing allowances. Many types of other allowances and benefits. Federal TSP access. 30 days of leave per year. $400,000 life insurance offered. Tuition assistance, free CLEP examinations; there are so many education benefits that most do not take advantage of. Leave may be taken in emergencies in most circumstances. The Army will go to great lengths to take care of personnel as long as it does not impact a current mission.
Cons: Must be married to get many benefits. For example, fathers that are expecting a child only get paternity leave if they are married to the mother.
Overall, wonderful benefits. As with most organizations, what you get out of it depends on what you put into it.

Great veterans packages from healthcare, housing allowance, education benefits (this is just ok now), VA benefits for home loans, Small Business loans, GI Bill. The down size is that due to the sequester housing allowance and education benefits have been diminished that are good just not great. Additionally the pension program is great if willing to do the 20 years or allowed to make it to the 20 year mark. If you do less than 20 years the retirement plan called TSP is not worth it because there is no matching

The Army provides average health care. You have to be very persistent if you want treatment beyond the most basic level of care like over the counter pain/cold medicine. The dental plan only includes one cleaning every 15 months now which is a change in the last year. Without a doubt, if you have a serious injury such as lost limb, complicated pregnancy, etc then you'll get the treatment you and your family needs. The Army has a thrift savings plan (TSP) which is their 401K. There isn't any employer match for Soldiers. You can't beat the vacation time. You earn 30 days of vacation per year which is on top of the 3 or 4 day weekend EVERY month that isn't charged vacation time. However, certain jobs prevent you from using your leave because they are so time intensive.
