20 year retirement making 50% of your base pay for the rest of your life isn't bad. There is a chance this could be changing in the near future though, which will require Soldiers to think about their own retirement instead of relying on the Army. It will move to more of a Corporate 401(k) style Retirement. Word on the street is that this will be grandfathered in, so those that are interested in this better get in quick!

There have been changes proposed that will modify the benefit. Currently, members earn 50 percent of the high 36 months of their salary starting at year 20. Some people earn a smaller benefit with medical or selected retirement. The pending plan will have a sharing 401k plan with a smaller backend benefit that all will earn. The benefits are very good. However, the lifestyle is not for everyone. This is not a job that you can just collect a paycheck. It requires real,sacrifice and commitment for the sake of those around you.
