I applied through a recruiter. The process took 1 week. I interviewed at Ascendion in May 2024
Interview
I had multiple interview experiences with Ascendion. My first recruiter was very nice and thoughtful and was one of the few recruiters ever to actually ask me ahead of time when they could call me. Interviews were scheduled quickly and communication was good. After this however, things go downhill.
First and foremost, Ascendion does not pass the client your resume before wasting your time with interviews. For the first role, I had two interviews. One was a third party and they literally asked me dozens of rapid fire JavaScript and React questions, as well as questions about other tools that I could not answer as they were unrelated to the role (think DevOps). I was then given a coding challenge where the interviewer literally just told me to make a ToDo app with literally no other information. He just said "Make a Todo App" and he asked me to just open any IDE to do it! I actually passed this interview.
The next interview... was exactly the same!! Just without the coding challenge. I was literally asked probably more than 50 random technical questions with some gotcha's thrown is as well. This type of interview is just disrespectful to more experience candidates as it has nothing to do with your competency; just if you remember what the third word in the second paragraph of the MDN docs for string.replace() is.
After this they mentioned they would NOW send my resume over. And of course the client did not okay my resume! Why waste two of my afternoons asking me 100 nonsense questions for that???
I then had another interview for a different role (but basically identical frontend skills) where they wanted me to do the same 2 step interviews. I said I refused to do these interviews as I already did them, and the role was too similar to bother with it. So, they LIED to me and said they'd just set me up on a behavioral interview (just asking on projects) with the Engineering Manager. Who then proceeded to ask me technical questions! And oh my gosh this was one of the most mind-numbing interviews I've had. He asked me "Why would a page be running slowly?". I gave a pretty well rounded answer as there are many reason why a page would be running slowly, and I also described the steps I would take to start a diagnosis... he then interrupted me to say that I wasn't being specific and I should, get this, describe the steps I would take. Which is exactly what I was doing! Then he asked me some question that very clearly a devops focused question which had nothing to do with the role. And seemed dissatisfied when I could not give specific on how to manage things I have no experience in. In fact, it's clear the interviewer hadn't even looked at my resume. He had asked me "What's your current project about" and I had to remind him I'm UNEMPLOYED which is obvious from my resume.
And I didn't get to the best part. Ascendion has absolutely terrible pay. They want you to jump through all these hoops so you can work a senior position that pays 40% less than what it should. You have to fight and beg to barely get a rate over 100k.
This company is ridiculous. Thank you to the first recruiter for being such a great communicator! Please take your talents to a better agency.

It was easy, first round was HR, so general questions and the second round was technical, in technical they asked about sql ( few queries), then based on ur resume few questions and a coding question to solve. overall it was easy.
