      Engineering Manager Interview

      Apr 18, 2025
      Anonymous Interview Candidate
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at Carrot Fertility in Mar 2025

      Interview

Applied for an Engineering Manager position under Lindsay (Lazzara) Kulzer, Director of Engineering at Carrot Fertility. Interview process was extremely lengthy, and time-consuming, but generally well-coordinated. I was told from the outset that it was 4 rounds of interviews, but the 4th round is more of a 4-in-1. It was 3.5 hours consisting of 4 panel interviews over the course of 2 days. I certainly would've reconsidered entering the process if I'd known that it was going to require this much time commitment. Each interview had built-in time for feedback, which was overwhelmingly positive. Several days later, I received an email indicating that they were passing, but offering to provide detailed feedback if I wanted it (of course!). I responded to this email and have yet to receive any follow-up from the company, despite all of the time & effort put into this process.

      Interview questions [4]

      Question 1

Product Requirements Technical Exercise: In this session, you'll be reviewing a product request. You'll discuss the problem with a mock stakeholder and conclude with a recommendation of how we could solve the problem.

      Question 2

Most Significant People Management Accomplishment: Engineering Management is fundamentally a people-leadership role. Your job is to lead (and be accountable for) a group of people to deliver results in dynamic and evolving circumstances. To lead people to deliver results, you need to be able to retain the best talent, develop and improve your team’s skills, and be an effective communicator in both challenging and ideal situations. Please describe your most significant accomplishment within this area of management. Also, please target 20 minutes to share your story. This will allow us to ask questions and have a discussion about your story.

      Question 3

Project Leadership discussion: We depend on our engineering managers to set expectations and drive results in a dynamic environment. This covers topics such as prioritization, alignment, negotiating conflict, setting a vision, coordinating high priority issues, allocating people to projects, visualizing work, etc. We use a mix of project management tactics here at Carrot to guide these results and they’re constantly evolving. Please describe for me your most significant accomplishment within this area of management. Given the nature of project leadership, it’s recommended that you prepare some visualizations for this discussion. Also, please target 20 to 25 minutes to share your story. This will allow us time to ask follow up questions during the interview.
      Answer question

      Question 4

This is a 60-minute remote code review exercise using Python, Flask and SQlite. For this exercise, you’re going to look at a teammate’s pull request for a small flask app that we developed for the interview process. Please try to be in a space with a stable and fast internet connection as you will be sharing your screen. Audio and microphone is required, whereas video is optional. We aren’t testing your knowledge of the frameworks and languages in this exercise. However, we want to see how you’d find the answer - you are free to use Google, notes, ChatGPT, etc to get unstuck with Python, SQLite, or Flask issues. If we see something that’s hard to Google, we’ll likely chip in. In order to set yourself up for success, a very basic understanding of these tools would be highly recommended.
