      Store Manager In Training Interview

      May 23, 2017
      Anonymous Interview Candidate
      Gurnee, IL
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Easy interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at Floor & Decor (Gurnee, IL) in May 2017

      Interview

I have a lot of flooring + management experience & excellent references, and I saw they were hiring for a "manager in training" position so I applied. Within a few days, they responded to come to a group interview. I was interviewed in a group of 6, none of whom were dressed for an interview in my opinion. I was the only one wearing a suit, I actually felt out of place & overdressed. I performed excellent in the group interview, I could tell the 3 people that were asking questions were impressed with my responses. The other 5 people I was interviewing against, many had bad or juvenile responses. As I expected, I was invited back for a "2 on 1" interview with the store & assistant manager after I had followed up with them via e-mail after the group interview. The 2 on 1 had similar questions as the group interview, and I answered all of their questions very well, I could tell they were impressed with my responses & knowledge of Floor & Decor as I had done a lot of research beforehand. At the end of the interview, the Assistant Manager (who actually handled the hiring) was walking me out and told me "it's my goal to be a store manager". At that point I knew I had no shot at a "manager in training" position (if that was even a position that was available to begin with) with them. Why would he bring in another employee like me who has a ton of flooring & management experience? I could tell by his comment that an employee like me could possibly push his plans back. When I got home I even told my wife this story & told her I doubted they were going to hire me. As I expected, about a week later I received a rejection e-mail. One would assume that a company that just went public would have a better hiring process than one more suited for hiring people looking for their 1st job.
