      Lead Product Designer Interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at Mews in Oct 2022

      Interview

I had applied to Mews as a Lead Product Designer and in a bit I got contacted by recruitment team, starting my hiring process. The overall interview experience was quite extensive, which I highly value, as it seemed to me that the company is paying attention in choosing the actual top talent in the industry. I loved the Design Directors that I had to speak with, the ambition and the mission that I was presented with. After a total of 6 interviews with recruitment specialist, design directors and designers from the company, I got an unofficial note - the job is yours. At the time, considering the impression that was already built on my end, I happily prioritised Mews versus other opportunities that I had at the moment. However, as the time passed, I couldn't seem to get an official offer and was always said that it will be presented to me very soon. For quite a bit of time I was not aware of even the most simple details - the salary ranges, that I could expect working in this position, starting dates etc. In more than a week after an unofficial offer I finally got a final reply - both me and the company being based in a EU country, I couldn't be hired because of my location and there's nothing they can do, even though this position was remote based. The company was aware of my location since I had applied to the position. I was then offered to work as a contractor, which in a couple of days also became impossible. A process like that seemed very irresponsible and chaotic. I wish most of luck to the design team, as the initiatives we had talked about felt really inspiring, however, I would advise other candidates to be a lot more careful in recruitment for this position.

Hi there, I very much appreciate you taking the time and effort to share your experience with the world. We very much regret what has happened throughout your process. I went back to our TA team to verify and hear 'their side of the story' but basically what you're describing is 100% accurate. The recruiter that you engaged with at Mews, told me that she and all involved hiring managers were super enthusiastic about your application. What happened next however, our TA team communicating that the role was yours, could be seen as a bit of a slip-up on our side. You see, Mews is growing at a very rapid pace. In addition, we consider ourselves a remote friendly company but that does not mean we can hire in every country we would like to. Sometimes countries (also in the EU) prove to be difficult to hire in, due to where Mews has locations and company registrations. We would love to be able to hire anywhere in the world, but unfortunately that's impossible. So when we discovered we couldn't offer you a contract (definitely late in the process, for which I also want to apologise), the only option was to hire you on a contractor basis. All in all, I can totally understand how you would call this process irresponsible and chaotic. It's definitely something we learned from and again, I would like to thank you for your honest and comprehensive review of the proceedings. I wish you all the best in your career.
