      Outside Sales Representative Interview

      Feb 21, 2020
      Anonymous employee
      Accepted offer
      Negative experience
      Easy interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 5+ months. I interviewed at SpotOn in Dec 2019

      Interview

The first person rushed me through the process and wanted to send me a starting-business package immediately. They said I would have an interview with the hiring manager. There was no question about whether or not I might get the job or an offer. There was only pressure about how quickly I could start. Regarding pay, they told me that I could easily make 50% more than what I currently make within the first three months. The next person was a little more helpful but also rushed through the processes. I expressed some concerns about having a family and this being a commission only position. They were very reassuring that Spoton was very family friendly and the next contact would be able to provide some alternative compensation plans during the first few months if needed. It was made clear that I could keep my current job but that I would be expected to quit relatively soon. After being handed off from the second person, the third contact failed to make an initial connection with me via the phone multiple times over about a week and a half period. This was supposed to be my on-boarding call. I tried to set up specific times but that was refused and I was told that I should keep trying. My concern was that if I can't reach this person to start the job at all, I got the feeling I couldn't rely on them afterwards. Finally we connected but they only had 15 minutes to talk because he had a meeting. I expressed my concerns and that I felt like I was being asked to make 100% of the risk with no reassurances that I would be supported. They said I was "flexing my muscles because of a couple missed calls". I also explained that I had financial concerns regarding compensation and when referencing my pay, they asked me why I would even consider leaving my current job. They made it clear that on average, their sales reps make about $45k annually, they have zero insight into the business potential in my area, and that they assumed but didn't know for sure that I would have directly in-house competition. They also made it clear that the recruiters I spoke to before him had no business telling me what they had told me regarding compensation. The best advice that last person gave me was to not leave my current job to work for Spoton. Needless to say, I do not work for Spoton.

      Application

I applied online. The process took 3 days. I interviewed at SpotOn in Aug 2025

      Interview

Extremely rushed process - three days to offer - and I was given different numbers from the hiring manager and recruiter about commission expectations. It was pretty disappointing as I liked the product but I could barely ask any of my own questions as they started the interview late and talked a lot about what they were looking for. Also asked me to prepare an assignment and it wasn't even discussed in the interview.
