Pros

Tbh the benefits are the best I've ever had. I had to increase my salary by over $10K at my next job to compensate for the benefits I received here. You get a low-deductible health plan at no cost to you. Anything I ever needed healthcare wise was always covered, and most of the time, in full. Great location in Chinatown. The building is beautifully renovated and there's a killer rooftop.

Cons

The other one and two star reviews are spot on. Your entire experience here is dictated by your immediate boss and your team, but unfortunately you wont know if it will be great or absolute hell until after you start. (Pro: its bearable for the long-term if you get a good manager) The organization as a whole needs a complete overhaul and it might be coming with the new CEO but it is hard to tell. Its mentioned in other reviews that the org definitely needs to trim the fat and reassess what it is they are even trying to accomplish anymore. There are whole teams that do completely insignificant work (e.g. whatever the heck that customer service group is??). Some whole CLUSTERS do nothing at all (e.g. MedEd). There is rampant nepotism and ethically unsound use of funds. I've seen managers contract out work to businesses owned by family members/spouses. They pay lip service to "diversity" and if you are not-white and selected to an all-white team you WILL be treated like a diversity hire (bc you likely are). They will also go out of their way to pay you less because of it. And you can completely forget about ever getting promoted if you're not white - at the very least you'll have to change teams but most likely you'll have to leave org. All of the managers are incompetent at actual management, even when they are quite skilled in their field, b/c the organization is set up that way. Management candidates that will challenge the status quo are outright rejected for that quality - they only hire/promote managers who are quiet and can be controlled. B/c of this, you'll either be micromanaged beyond anything you've ever experienced or completely left alone to learn your entire role on your own. I've held different positions on different teams and every time, I moved departments I was lied to about what the position was and what the work was. I don't think it was malicious - its just again, the managers don't know how to do basic people management tasks. On paper and in the interview it will sound amazing and like a great match for your skills. In practice, you'll spend your day either begging for work or drowning in annoying administrative and customer service tasks. Despite all of the nepotism, I never recommend this place to my friends or family. If you are a non-manager and/or non-white find alternatives - this place is just going to drain you.

AAMC Response

Thank you for taking the time to leave a review. We’re sorry you’ve had some negative experiences working at AAMC. We are aware that there is some inconsistency with our supervisors following AAMC procedures and best practices therefore we’ve rolled out a 3-course mandatory supervisor training to better align supervisors of all experience levels on what the AAMC expects of them regarding recruitment and supervising employees. This course enables supervisors to provide a consistent and positive experience to all employees. We were thrilled to have welcomed our new CEO Dr. David Skorton to the AAMC family earlier this year. With new leadership often comes change and while that’s exciting and we are looking forward to it, we understand this can also bring feelings of anxiety. Each of our cluster’s work is tied directly to our mission and each provides value to students and our constituents in an impactful way. We highly encourage our employees to report ethics violations. If an employee doesn’t feel comfortable reporting them to their supervisor, Chief or HR partner please feel free to use our ethics hotline which can be found on our internal website. We take your insights about discrimination and lack of diversity seriously. The AAMC is committed to providing its employees a diverse and inclusive environment. We have a diversity, equity, and inclusion initiative to educate our supervisors and make them aware of our challenges and to implement solutions. We are working to ensure diversity and inclusion is ingrained in all human resources practices. Please reach out if you’d like to discuss this further.

Pros

Location - it's in Chinatown so it's convenient.

Cons

Everything. Heavy turnover. Nobody cares. The entire work group is unhappy and wants to leave if they haven't already. Leadership thinks things are working so they ignore concerns that are raised.

Pros

- They have excellent benefits. They provide an excellent retirement package. - They have options to telework. - They have an excellent work/life balance.

Cons

- Low salary. - The managers micromanage. - Everything seems like a huge deal all the time from the font used on emails to the wording. - Managers (at least in my unit) want to do what they can to catch someone doing something wrong. The mangers can be demeaning and petty and they make you feel like you are always doing something wrong. - Managers could care less about career advancement. - You receive no praise. For example, you are asked to produce a data report. You work on it, send it to the manager with a draft email, and then he/she will send it to whomever requested the data without mentioning you had any part of it and w/o evening acknowledging that you send it to them. No "Thanks" or "Good job". But if the font is not right or the spacing is off by a millimeter then you will most definitely get a response back.
