Pros

Good pay and benefits.

Cons

Worked for many years in various roles, and can say hands down that the organization has grown increasingly dysfunctional with current management (in my department) displaying blatant acts of moral corruption - milking benefits with excessive travel and expensing while simultaneously exercising favoritism and suppressing creativity and upward mobility. Overall, most people working in the media department are miserable and too scared to say anything about it because they know they will be let go, or punished in some legitimatized way.

Pros

Overall the benefits, bonuses and salary is great at AARP. I love the mission statement, the core business and values, and what this organization does for the 50+ community. Free education at any accredited university or college and great people to work with.

Cons

The executive I supported is very high maintenance and will throw you under the bus. I was her fourth assistant in two years. She's had three more since I left in mid summer 2016. She's extremely busy and travels a lot, but will not spend enough 1:1 time with her assistant. She's very forgetful yet demanding, won't listen to reason, and will not include or inform you about important information. You may lose a few skill sets, too as you will only be utilized to schedule meetings and travel. I never used PowerPoint or Excel, but was asked if I knew the software during the interview.

Pros

Great benefit - Tuition assistance, Pension, relaxed atmosphere

Cons

Most mid managers/Directors have no clue about what they are doing. Most of the hires especially in info tech are mostly due to sentiments and not down to qualifications. Too much talk no action Few expertise in house for a lot of highly paid employees
