Pros

Good quality products. They spend a lot of time on testing and operations to deliver good products to their customers.

Cons

No growth. They don't like to hear fresh ideas from employees. Very high employee turnover - many employees leave, others are terminated without cause. HR will repeatedly tell you that you are an at-will employee, meaning they can show you the door anytime they want. Don't jeopardize your career by taking a job here.

Pros

Vendors come in and train on their products. Products are built in the same building so you can see what you’re learning.

Cons

It doesn’t take more than a week to see that the management team is all related. Family comes in and is given VP or Director titles with no experience. No track record of performance. Family employees are given flexible hours, higher pay. Non family are expected to work long hours with lower than industry standard pay.

AMAX Engineering Response

This review is quite surprising because it is frankly, false. While AMAX is a family-owned business, every management position is held by a person with a strong and proven track record in their areas of expertise, and are fully-qualified for their position by experience and capability, whether or not they are family. There has never been a single instance in the 40 year history of the company in which “family” has come in and was given a VP or Director title with no experience. Furthermore, to make a distinction between family and non-family members and their level of work ethic and commitment is unfair—one thing that makes AMAX special is the equal commitment to make the company successful, and the equal expectations for all employees to make that commitment. At AMAX there is no distinction between expectations of family members versus non-family—when you are part of AMAX, you are part of the AMAX family, and we all work together to achieve success. We do understand there are pros and cons that are unique to family-owned businesses, and we are always open to addressing any employee concerns and ways in which we can improve. But we do have to take a strong and clear stance when the content of the review is based on an outright lie.

Not a great company

Pros

Workload on the engineering/operations side is pretty minimal and repetitive (allowing for lots of downtime). Management was pretty relaxed as long as you showed you were contributing and getting work done at the weekly update meetings. Really easy to get a job since the turnover rate is so high.

Cons

Very little money is cycled back into the company (no R&D department), and most of that money goes into the sales/marketing department leaving the infrastructure of the company pretty weak. The Engineering department consists of several "engineers" from non-accredited universities (e.g. Phoenix, Devry, etc.) whose jobs are just glorified production workers that can troubleshoot a bit. There's no team atmosphere at all - people are more worried about covering for themselves than pushing for the company to succeed. Company morale/outlook is observably low leading to an unnaturally high turnover rate. AMAX makes use of their employees being immigrants or fresh graduates to keep compensation at a minimum, and rather than emphasizing employee retention they resort to hiring replacements to keep salaries low. Once employees gain enough experience they jump to competing companies (e.g. Synnex) as soon as the opportunity arises. Ultimately time spent working for AMAX is only useful as something to put on your resume for future job prospects rather than a period of growth.
