Pros

I have had amazing co-workers! Our unit we always help one another so that we are never alone, and a great learning environment. Learned a lot on this unit as a new grad, this was boot camp to prepare me to go to anywhere. Pay has increased since I started, which I think all health care workers need to be paid more in general. Overall my co workers are the only thing that make work somewhat bearable.

Cons

As of recently, the hospital as been so short staffed as I'm sure many hospitals are but with the acuity of patient there are not suitable for high patient ratios. Hospital is offering incentive to pick up which is a decent amount, but not enough in my opinion. Many people are leaving the bedside for this reason.

Disposable Staff

Pros

- Coworkers friendly and helpful, team-oriented - Competitive pay

Cons

- Very quick turnaround, every 3-6 months - High burnout rate for new grads - Unsafe nurse-to-patient ratios on high-acuity unit - Will do anything to save a dollar, including sending staff home early when it is inappropriate to do so and would jeopardize the safety of staff and patients alike… and then retaliate against the staff who speak up against this practice

Pros

Pay for PRN PCT was decent Hospital experience

Cons

Unwelcoming staff Management states they are doing "safe staffing" but 1 PCT to 18 patients in acute care is not safe for the PCT or the patients. They're just pinching pennies. Equipment falling apart, held together with tape Lots of talking behind others' backs Not a welcoming atmosphere- I know I mentioned this twice. That's how bad it was. This was the most toxic environment I was ever in. They keep saying that it's everyone's responsibility to answer call lights but nurses will sit there and ignore call lights even when the PCT is already running around changing people, toileting, taking accuchecks, vital signs...there's no help amongst interdisciplinary teams. Handled COVID during peak (before vaccines) poorly: During peak COVID, the director sent out a mass e-mail to everyone on our floor basically telling us that our concerns were invalid and to stop complaining and deal with it. During peak COVID, housekeeping and dietary would not enter COVID+ rooms so the rooms were always filthy with trash overflowing and sharps bins overflowing. Did not offer COVID testing If you got COVID from work, you were financially responsible to seek treatment When a COVID+ patient was discharged, housekeeping would spend maybe 10 minutes "cleaning" out the room for the next patient. There is no way they disinfected all the surfaces. Zero support from leadership including charge nurses, manager, director
