Pros

You get to play with and socialize with the animals at the shelter. You also get to take the dogs out for walks.

Cons

The pay is horrendous. You do not have discretion over who you approve for adoption. You have no power over the safety and security of the animals

Pros

Great location. Good cause. Not great but relatively decent pay. Good brand recognition. Provides grants to up and coming animal protection startups.

Cons

Management is persnickety about timeliness, hierarchy, and communication. The organization strives too hard to mimic the political savvyness, visibility, and fundraising appeal of its main competitor, the HSUS. In the process it looks antiquated and frumpy and risks becoming irrelevant. And the end result is an inferiority complex. Its new CEO is a great manager but a lackluster leader.

Pros

Place to be challenged - write professional journal articles. Place to learn and advance your career - travel to conferences, learn from highly educated colleagues, tuition reimbursement. Place to be at home - accepting and supportive colleagues. Someone is always in the office. Great benefits - super 401(k) 4% employer contribution and 4% match, excellent health plan, and all the other normal benefits. Good number of vacation, personal, and sick days. Reasonable salaries - best in the area for veterinary and veterinary technician positions. Competitive salaries for IT positions. Ed Sayres is a wonderful person, humble, gentle, and effective in leading the organization.

Cons

Fast-paced. 24/7, so every shift has to be covered. That actually provides additional flexibility (and more pay for some shifts), but someone has to be there on holidays. Dealing with angry, stressed-out animal parents on the phone is hard. Turnover is surprisingly low for the amount of stress the call center employees process.
