Pros

Like any agency, there is a handful of people whose compassion and initiative help keep your head above water. These people, who are leaving day by day as they go unnoticed by upper management, are the fleeting soul of this company. Innovative thinkers, genuine team players, and creative minds still exist, but they are an endangered breed as they are often silenced by those at the top...if they haven't left on their own accord already. There's a hiring surge for a reason, it seems like no one who's been at the company since the late 90s lasts or gets promoted.

Cons

In addition to the usual disadvantages you see at every agency (long hours, tight deadlines, etc), AbelsonTaylor is unique in that it uses fear management and outdated leadership styles (obsessed with your title, much?) to generate recycled and borderline overused creative ideas and thinking. Clients and potential employees beware, creativity is stifled by a toxic agency culture that prioritizes meeting self-imposed impossible deadlines over creative innovation. New employees: you will feel undervalued, someone else may take credit for your work, you will likely be berated in front of your peers, and you may wonder if it's like this everywhere (it's not). Clients: you may see recycled work, agency capabilities may be grossly inflated (to the point where they are borderline lying). If they are the cheapest agency, they are for a reason (you get what you don't pay for), and if they're not the cheapest option, why are you still here?

Thank you for sharing your feedback. I am disheartened to hear it, as we have been working hard to create a culture that empowers employees to do their very best work and reward them for it. Over the past year, we have launched a structured professional development program and also promoted nearly 50 employees. We’re proud of our creative work. In 2020, we were finalists in 29 different categories across seven major award programs, and eight of our programs were awarded medals. We’re pushing ourselves to go even further and are simplifying our processes to more fully unleash our employees’ creativity. I would welcome the chance to speak 1x1 about your concerns and thoughts on what we can be doing better or differently. I hope you feel comfortable doing so. Please email me at beth.carik@abelsontaylor.com so we can set up a time to talk. Thank you again for your thoughts. - Beth Carik, VP HR

Started out great...

Pros

There still seems to be a semi-decent work life balance (depending on your department. Free drinks & snacks.

Cons

AT used to be a great place to work. The company cared a lot about its employees and it was generally a happy place to work. After several rounds of layoffs, it became very unpleasant. It seemed management was no longer interested in keeping its best and brightest. AT lost a lot of great talent to other places.

Pros

Nice Loop location. Free snacks. Decent office space environment. Carpet is cleaned regularly. Ample office supplies. Decent place to start your career and get it on your resume, but you should leave within 2 years for true career growth and industry advancement.

Cons

Very little trust between staff and management. Not really sure if they are doing the right thing for employees. Company direction is questionable by many. No loyalty for employees who have been there a long time. Promotions are limited above supervisor because there is no career planning. You are a number to the CFO. VPs are micro-managers because they don't have anything else to do. It is frowned upon to question the status quo. They like it how it is and process is set up to fight change through multiple committees and endless meetings. Tired, overthought creative runs the agency and yet no significant, notable awards are won in years. Creative leadership is mean, catty and egotistical. Never a pleasure interacting with them. They are the time and budget wasters. There is better collaboration with the senior art and copy folks who pretty much do all the work anyways.
