Pros

AF is a truly mission driven organization where colleagues and leadership both believe in the mission and genuinely try to live by AF core values in the work that we do. It is very fulfilling to be a part of school system that is actually making it happen for kids - great achievement results, remarkable college matriculation, etc. AF schools do not always perform evenly, but at 35 schools there are now tens of thousands of kids getting a great education. AF is an organization that really believes in reflection and in developing people. I have been here for over 10 years and every year brings new challenges and opportunities; and I have always felt like have the support of great colleagues and a strong coach / manager.

Cons

As noted in many other posts -- it is exhausting work. Good work, but exhausting work.

Pros

The most committed teachers! I learned so much from grade level team teachers. They were amazing to learn from and welcomed me with open arms. I taught at AFCHES and the work is hard, but teachers there were committed. I remember asking why my coteacher had stayed for close to 8 years at the school because the work and the commitment IS high. She said when it came down to it, it was the kids. She watched the kids grow as first graders and go onto middle school and she was happy she still got to watch them grow. UHM, inspirational! If you love kids, want to be challenged and grow as a teacher, this is definitely the place.

Cons

You have to make an effort to create a work life balance. It’s hard the first three months because of the back to school, but if you feel like your struggling it’s important to voice that and ask for support. It’s important to let your grade level team, coteacher, principal know how to best support you!
