Pros

- smart, passionate co-workers - very high standards for student achievement and classroom instruction - great resources; very easy to get all materials (books, classroom supplies, science materials, sports equipments etc.) needed for students - mission-oriented - teacher development at every level is highly prioritized - solutions-oriented and feedback-driven decision making - school-level leadership and network higher-ups are usually willing to listen to concerns and have historically taken steps to change course if a particular model/policy doesn't work as hoped

Cons

- top-heavy administration -- too much oversight can diminish any sense of agency a teacher might have - long, busy hours for students and teachers - high degree of stress and burnout amongst students and teachers, with little promise to alleviate triggers such as extensive standardized testing, strict attendance policies, high volume of accountability checkpoints, and very disruptive behaviors - at many schools (especially in Connecticut), behavioral issues are not effectively addressed and cause entire classrooms of students to lose unacceptable amounts of learning time and teacher/peer rapport - often hires young, inexperienced teachers that are ineffective in classroom management -limited emphasis on student character development due to high emphasis on academic achievement

Achievement First Response

This is one of the very last things we’d ever want to hear from any team member – but if this was your experience then we need to hear it. And I thank you for sharing it. I’d be even more grateful if you’d consider reaching out to me and discussing (in confidence) more about your experience, including what school you were at. We never want this to be someone’s experience and so we regret to hear that it was yours. For years we have been striving to make sure our organization is diverse and inclusive because it’s vital to our success in our mission. We are privileged to serve communities in New York, Connecticut, and Providence and our families and students identify overwhelmingly as people of color - with a rich variety of proud identities and heritage. We deeply believe that we must provide our kids a team of talented adults that reflects that rich diversity, and that we can succeed at maximizing our kids potential when our teams have many strong players that look like our students and deeply identify with their experience. For that reason, we strive to recruit people of color and first-generation college students (most of our hires identified last year) and we are proud that our retention of teachers is higher within those groups. But where we are falling short and people’s experience is not fully inclusive and equitable, we have to learn more and keep growing. In that spirit, if you are willing to reach out, I would appreciate it immensely. -Tom Kaiser, Chief Talent Officer tomkaiser@achievementfirst.org

Pros

I recently started my 9th year at Achievement First, and it keeps getting better and better. Even in my 9th year, I am still receiving helpful positive and critical feedback on a weekly, if not daily, basis that pushes me to be a better teammate and manager. Our schools are finding the balance of being warm and demanding at the same time, and student achievement is increasing every single year.

Cons

There is always more to do each day - working at night is routine at least 4 nights/week. I don't mind it because I see the benefits, but you should know it coming into the organization.
