Pros

Great students. Great professional development. Mostly great colleagues.

Cons

Read the story in the New Haven Register about the student-led protest and walk out in New Haven at Amistad High School. Really really sad that the students felt they were so mistreated that they had to protest the "all white" staff. What they say about how they are treated is accurate. They are oppressed and disrespected. This alone should tell you that as an educator you would not want to be a part of treating other people this way.

Pros

Achievement First creates an environment that truly lives our value of "team and family": you feel like you are part of the AF family, and you are motivated to work hard day in and day out because you're part of a hard-working, committed, dedicated, loving team of educators.

Cons

AF requires a lot. People work hard, and hard work is the expectation. While we've made a tone of progress in the past few years, we're still improving in our effort to make this job sustainable into parenthood and beyond.

Pros

-I have a strong and amazing manager (there are so many who fit that description at AF) -AF has always been willing to invest in my professional development -Working with families and scholars!!! (Huge bonus!!!) -Working alongside people who are deeply invested in the success of our scholars and work as a TEAM -AF is willing to look at short falls as learning moments from which to build and to grow -You get routine feedback and support to help you develop on a day to day basis, not just during Days of Practice or beginning of year professional development sessions

Cons

-Long hours- especially at the school (having your own babies or young children is hard when working school hours) -Very real growing pains as we look at our diversity, inclusiveness and grapple with what it means to be/how to be an anti-racist organization --it is hard to be IN the process but honestly, this could also be a "pro" because AF is choosing to actively be IN the process. -long commute to some of our schools in East NY, if you live in Manhattan/downtown Brooklyn, which is salient since the school day starts at 7:15 with scholars and you often need to be there earlier
