Pros

If you want to get better at what you do and work with people who are genuinely invested in you as a person, AF is the place to come. This is a place that cares about developing it's people. They ultimately believe that the kids come first and every decision they make drives towards that.

Cons

When working in ed reform, the hours will always be long because there is always more to do. But AF is proactively working on how to make this better and more sustainable for people. The organization is quick to admit when there is room for growth.

Pros

When I started at Achievement First in 2009, I knew I wanted to work in social justice but was completely unsure of myself as a teacher. 8 years later, and it was the best decision I've ever made. AF continually trains and teaches me to be a stronger teacher with coaching, curriculum, built-in collaboration time with teammates, and nonstop support. The network itself has grown more and more successful because it constantly strives to improve and hear feedback. It's been incredible to see the transformation of the network into a phenomenal success - and still hear the higher ups say we can learn and grow even more. The staff have become some of my best friends who I can count on in and out of school. I truly feel part of a community that is positive, caring, and shares the same vision as me.

Cons

With so much work to do, it can be hard at times to feel totally successful. You have to set boundaries and limits with yourself and others in order to make it work. You have to know that getting better takes time, even though you're tempted to compare yourself to the rockstars around you.

Pros

Achievement First is where I became an educator for life. You will not find a more committed and intelligent group of people anywhere in this country who are working incredibly hard to serve students and families in under-served and disenfranchised communities. If you read the reviews on this site, one of the most frequently mentioned ideas is that of "development." If you are a teacher looking to get into the big leagues, you will grow at AF. I came to AF as a teacher in 2008, and left ready to be a school leader in 2013 when I moved out of state.

Cons

It is true that the hours are long and the work is difficult. Put simply: it's not for everybody, and certainly not for somebody who wants to punch a clock.
