Pros

Hardworking, competent, and passionate peers. Everyone there is working towards the same mission.

Cons

Poor work life balance, and administration only value those who perfectly fit their cookie cutter AF teacher mold. Leaders are not held to the same standard of excellence.

Pros

AF truly believes in feedback. The network is consistently taking feedback and implementing it to improve and they ask you to do the same as a teacher. They have a strong system in place to develop teachers. Teachers receive daily coaching and weekly professional development to build skill. On a more personal note, the students are truly amazing. Parent involvement is high and everything is in service of the kids.

Cons

It can be tough to find work-life balance in the beginning. However, AF is constantly reflecting as a network to improve this. They've shortened the day and I've found it much easier to manage work-life balance after being here for a few years.

Pros

The other teachers were incredibly passionate and dedicated, the kids were amazing (hardworking, funny, sweet), the pay is excellent (since leaving, I haven’t found a school that comes close to offering what AF has offered me), the benefits are fantastic, there is a lot of opportunity for growth and to move up in leadership, and there is a culture of feedback.

Cons

The management is very top-down, they use the same approaches and leadership is often unwilling to take feedback to modernize approaches, a few of the principals I worked with (I had worked with 4 in total during my time at AF) used intimidation and gossip to “get their way”, the culture towards students can be pretty oppressive (sit up straight, like completely straight), and the curriculum is only test-centered (kids aren’t digging deeply into the content; rather, they are bombarded with test prep), work/life balance is rough!
