Pros

The first job I had out of college was at Achievement First, via Teach for America. Although the work was certainly challenging and the hours often long, I left school every day believing that I was a part of something greater than myself. I believed in AF's mission, and I can't speak more highly of my peers. I have not experienced a workplace with more devoted employees and staff since I left AF a few years ago.

Cons

I believe that AF has its heart in the right place. But I also believe that children would be benefitted by greater opportunities for self-motivation. AF has a style, and it is effective. But it can sometimes be frustrating to be bound by their style when it is not a perfect match for who you are.

Pros

An abundance of professional development and constant feedback allows you to grow as both a teacher and as a person. AF is truly changing the trajectory for thousands of low-income students and we genuinely believe in our mission statement that our scholars will become the next generation of leaders in their communities.

Cons

The nature of the work itself is exhausting! Staff culture seems to vary by school but the school I work at has exceptionally strong teacher morale.

Thank you so much for sharing this! It definitely brought a smile to read about your experience -- and I appreciated your candor for other people looking to learn about AF. To your point about AF graduates becoming the next generation of leaders in their communities: we just hired two AF Brooklyn High School alumni as Teachers-in-Residence. I can't wait until we have similar stories in Providence... -Tom Kaiser, Chief Talent Officer

Pros

Great place for a push for academics starting as young as kindergarten

Cons

They need to work on building and supporting the whole child. Not just academically but socially and emotionally as well.

Many thanks for sharing your current experience at AF. I'm happy that you're experiencing our high bar for student achievement. It's a national crisis that so many kids will never experience those kinds of expectations for their academic performance. But as you also rightly name - it's not the whole story. Our goal is not a high score on a test exam, it's to make sure our kids can succeed in college and come back to be leaders in our communities. And that means that we have to prepare them and give them opportunities that go far beyond strict academic preparation. While we're still growing in this area, without question, we've added extra-curricular programs during the school day (open to all students) in many of our middle schools these past two years, and we've expanded our quiz bowl, debate, and student government programs. With our Greenfield model, we've become a leading player in the ed-reform movement in trying to develop innovative ways to reach the whole child. In part because we have teammates like you who are going to help us figure this out and push us forward, I am excited to see what is next on AF's journey to provide game-changing schools for kids, not just game-changing academic instruction. -Tom Kaiser, Chief Talent Officer
