Pros

The most committed teachers! I learned so much from grade level team teachers. They were amazing to learn from and welcomed me with open arms. I taught at AFCHES and the work is hard, but teachers there were committed. I remember asking why my coteacher had stayed for close to 8 years at the school because the work and the commitment IS high. She said when it came down to it, it was the kids. She watched the kids grow as first graders and go onto middle school and she was happy she still got to watch them grow. UHM, inspirational! If you love kids, want to be challenged and grow as a teacher, this is definitely the place.

Cons

You have to make an effort to create a work life balance. It’s hard the first three months because of the back to school, but if you feel like your struggling it’s important to voice that and ask for support. It’s important to let your grade level team, coteacher, principal know how to best support you!

Pros

I received an enormous amount of support and coaching throughout my two years at AF Hartford High. The leadership team truly cares about teacher development. My coaches were well versed in core content and management strategies. The school works diligently to gather data to push students behaviorally and academically. The curriculum is very rigorous and the behavior expectations are high but that is coupled with strong support from management, coworkers, and parents. You are provided with a very strong curriculum and you have some leeway (depending on the subject) to make adjustments as you see fit. In some courses, lesson plans are provided which provides relief to some teachers. If I hadn't moved locations, I could see myself staying with AF for many many years.

Cons

The workdays are long (varies by location)

Pros

Student and staff culture is positive, consistent and effective. There are no micro aggressions between staff. Pay is great for the work. Growing you as a teacher is the goal with your coach throughout the year- you will exponentially get better as a teacher. Consistent expectations for all (staff, students, and leadership). Systems in all aspects of the school are strategically placed and implemented. I’m thankful and grateful to be a part of an inclusive and supportive team. School is including more Diveristy and inclusiveness Pd’s which is appreciated.

Cons

Work life balance- long work hours (7:00-4:30). Even with some experience, coming into AF, some staff will treat you as a “new teacher”. Science is on the back burner, for the most part, with unclear grading rubrics.
